Assistant Supervising Attorney
About the role
Legal Aid of Western Missouri (LAWMO) is seeking an Assistant Supervising Attorney for our Consumer Protection Unit in our Central Kansas City, Missouri office. The Consumer Protection Unit represents clients with limited income in consumer and debt collection defense, bankruptcy, probate, and mortgage foreclosure defense and loan modifications. This is a new position that will support the Supervising Attorney in managing the team's nine attorneys, paralegals, and support staff.
Responsibilities
- Maintain an active caseload across the unit's practice areas, including a consistent, regular presence in court.
- Support the Supervising Attorney in the supervision and evaluation of team staff.
- Conduct case reviews and support quality-control procedures, helping ensure adherence to regulatory and grant requirements.
- Provide substantive guidance to team members on complex legal questions, case theory, and litigation strategy.
- Support the Supervising Attorney in monitoring adherence to case acceptance standards and program priorities and policies.
- Serve as a point of contact for the team in the Supervising Attorney's absence.
- Other duties and special projects as assigned.
Requirements
- Active Missouri Bar license or eligible for licensure in Missouri through reciprocity.
- Minimum of six years of legal experience.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively across diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
- Demonstrated track record of high-quality legal representation, with an innovative and client-centered approach to advocacy that goes above and beyond to achieve meaningful outcomes for clients.
Preferred Qualifications
- Supervisory experience.
- Bankruptcy, mortgage foreclosure defense, or debt defense experience.
Location
This role is an in-person role based in Legal Aid's Central office in Kansas City, Missouri. Regular in-office attendance is expected, and Legal Aid offers flexible work arrangements to support employees in maintaining schedules that enable them to perform at their best.
Pay
The salary range for this position is $76,500 - $113,271 on Legal Aid’s formal salary scale. Placement on the range will be based on factors such as years of relevant experience, budget, and internal equity.
