Assistant Resident Engineer - Roadway
What You Will Do
GFT is seeking an experienced Assistant Resident Engineer - Roadway to join our Construction Services team in New York. This is a full-time, onsite opportunity to lead roadway-related transportation projects, ensuring quality, safety, and efficiency in the field.
What You’ll Be Challenged To Do
- Support the oversight of complex infrastructure construction projects that improve mobility, safety, and quality of life.
- Assist with coordinating inspection teams, working with contractors, and helping ensure compliance with standards and contract documents.
- Contribute to the successful delivery of roads, bridges, and transit systems that support emergency access and economic growth.
- Aid in project documentation, schedule monitoring, testing coordination, and stakeholder communication.
- Assist with preparing and reviewing correspondence between contractors, clients, and project stakeholders.
- Coordinate and oversee testing agencies and field testing activities.
- Maintain accurate project records and documentation.
- Facilitate responses to contractor Requests for Information (RFIs).
- Coordinate equipment and facility start-up activities.
- Conduct and/or assist with construction meetings.
- Support coordination of inspectors and on-site personnel.
- Prepare and review change order documentation.
- Aid Document Control staff with contractor schedule compliance tracking.
- Prepare progress reports and assist with Substantial and Final Completion documentation.
Education | Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license (New York preferred) or NICET Level IV certification.
- Minimum of 8 years of relevant construction inspection and management including oversight of roadway/highway/bridge infrastructure projects.
- Prior experience with NYSDOT, NYSTA, MTA Bridges and Tunnels, or Metro-North Railroad projects.
- OSHA 30-hour certification or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire.
- Working knowledge of Project Management Procedures (PMPs) and Project Management Guidelines (PMGs) preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for effective collaboration with contractors, owners, subconsultants, designers, and architects.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting engineering plans, specifications, and construction schedules.
- Physically able to work in the field, including navigating uneven terrain, climbing ladders, working at heights, and performing duties in various outdoor weather conditions.
- Availability for occasional night and weekend work.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to travel to various sites.
Compensation
The salary range for this role is $120,000 - $140,000 per year. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
