Position Overview
The Assistant Quarry Superintendent supports the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation of assigned quarry locations. This role partners closely with the Quarry Superintendent to oversee daily production, lead crews, and ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and operational standards.
Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
- Safety & Compliance
- Promote a zero-incident safety culture; ensure MSHA/OSHA/DOT compliance
- Identify and correct hazards; lead safety meetings and incident follow-up
- Reinforce safe behaviors across crews and contractors
- Union Leadership & Labor Relations
- Supervise union employees in accordance with CBA requirements
- Apply work rules, attendance, and discipline fairly and consistently
- Partner with HR on grievances, investigations, and contract interpretation
- Maintain productive relationships with union stewards and crews
- Operations & Production
- Support drilling, blasting, crushing, and load-out activities
- Monitor production vs. plan; adjust staffing, equipment, and workflows
- Analyze performance gaps and implement corrective actions
- Aid in mine and pit planning
- People Leadership
- Set expectations; coach, develop, and hold crews accountable
- Train and onboard employees; build bench strength for lead roles
- Drive engagement and a high-performance team environment
- Maintenance & Cost Control
- Coordinate preventative maintenance and repairs to maximize uptime
- Track labor, materials, and maintenance activities
- Support cost control and continuous improvement initiatives
- Site & Team Collaboration
- Maintain a safe, clean, and professional site
- Partner cross-functionally with operations, maintenance, and safety teams
Education/Experience
- To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering or similar is preferred but not required.
- Previous related experience in construction field is preferred not required.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a supervisory position.
- Knowledge of profit and loss statements and an understanding of basic accounting principles.
- Excellent skills with Microsoft Office and the ability to rapidly learn different software applications.
- Possess strong basic math knowledge.
- Basic surveying and mapping skills are required.
- Strong communication and leadership skills are necessary.
- Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Comprehensive understanding of MSHA regulations.
- Ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently and to direct employees effectively.
