Preview Proceed to Checkout Pay Later Cancel Public Services ◄ Back to All Categories ASSISTANT PUBLIC WORKS SUPERINTENDENT Morehead City is seeking a dedicated and experienced Assistant Public Works Superintendent to join our Public Services team. This position performs advanced skilled technical and administrative work supervising and participating in the maintenance and repair of streets, rights-of-way, drainage systems, public facilities, and grounds. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on leader with strong technical knowledge, a commitment to safety, and the ability to effectively manage personnel and resources in a dynamic work environment. Essential Duties Include (but Are Not Limited To) Supervising and participating in maintenance crews responsible for cemeteries, restrooms, landscaping, and public areas.Overseeing installation, repair, and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, drainage systems, traffic signs, and related infrastructure.Assisting with recruitment, training, scheduling, and evaluation of staff; providing coaching, discipline, and performance management as needed.Supervising mowing, tree trimming, and vegetation management, including pesticide application scheduling.Overseeing building and grounds maintenance activities including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and carpentry work.Supervising maintenance and repair of automotive and construction equipment.Coordinating resurfacing and patching of streets and repair of drainage and related systems.Assisting with cemetery operations, including confirmation of grave sites.Supporting setup for events, festivals, and public meetings.Leading cleanup and recovery efforts following natural disasters.Enforcing safety standards, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance.Coordinating personnel, equipment, and materials for efficient operations.Preparing cost estimates and securing necessary supplies and equipment.Maintaining records, reports, and work orders.Serving as Public Works Superintendent in their absence. Ideal Candidates Will Have Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in maintenance and repair operations.Strong understanding of safety practices, codes, and inspection requirements.Skill in diagnosing problems and estimating time and materials for projects.Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and technical drawings.Strong leadership skills with the ability to plan, assign, and supervise work.Ability to maintain accurate records and establish effective working relationships with staff, officials, vendors, and the public. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED and one to three years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Valid North Carolina driver’s license.Possession of a Pesticide Applicator’s License or the ability to obtain within a specified timeframe. Position Details This is a full-time position that involves both field and administrative work. The role requires frequent outdoor work in varying weather conditions and exposure to typical hazards associated with public services operations. Physical demands include light work with occasional lifting, walking, standing, and operation of tools and equipment. Salary Range Salary range begins at $65,324.
