Assistant Project Scientist-Herbert Wertheim School of Optomery and Vision Science

This position is a one-year term with the possibility of renewal, contingent on performance and availability of funding. The anticipated start date is Fall 2026, with a 100% time commitment. The salary range is based on the UC academic salary scales for the Project Scientist Series, with a reasonable estimate of $79,400-$92,200.

About the Role

The UC Berkeley Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry and Vision Science seeks an Assistant Project Scientist to investigate the microbial pathogenesis of corneal infections. The role focuses on understanding the pathogenesis of infections involving Pseudomonas aeruginosa, particularly the intracellular life of the pathogen and bacterial adaptations associated with antibiotic tolerance. Another key project area involves studying the role of sensory nerves in defending the eye against bacterial adhesion.

Responsibilities

• Conduct experimental work in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo using multiple models of infection and host defense.
• Perform genomic and proteomic analysis of bacteria and host cells.
• Analyze large datasets and conduct statistical analysis.
• Utilize high-resolution live cell spatial imaging.
• Write and publish manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals.
• Present research findings at scientific conferences.
• Mentor undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
• Prepare research grant progress reports.
• Contribute to laboratory maintenance and protocol renewals/submissions.

Requirements

• PhD degree or equivalent international degree (required at time of application).
• Two years of post-PhD research experience (required at time of start).
• Evidence of a commitment to research publication, demonstrated by a record of peer-reviewed publications, manuscripts in preparation, submitted works, or other scholarly contributions.

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

• PhD in Microbiology, Cell Biology, Molecular Genetics, or a related field.
• Theoretical and practical expertise in microbial pathogenesis, acquired through at least two years of post-doctoral work.
• Experience with microbial pathogenesis research.
