Assistant Professor Small Animal Internal Medicine (SAIM)

Faculty position in Small Animal Internal Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, available at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level in either the clinical track or tenure track, tailored to the candidate’s qualifications and interests.

About the role

The Department of Medical Sciences invites applications for a full-time faculty member to join the Small Animal Internal Medicine (SAIM) service at UW Veterinary Care. The successful candidate will contribute to the teaching mission through clinical and didactic instruction of veterinary students, interns, and residents, as well as through continuing education programs. Scholarly activity—whether clinical research, translational studies, or educational scholarship—is expected to support academic clinical practice.

The SAIM team includes four clinical-track faculty, six residents, twelve rotating interns, four certified veterinary technicians, one veterinary assistant, and one client care liaison. The service manages approximately 2,500 cases annually out of 27,400 small animal patients seen at UW Veterinary Care.

The School of Veterinary Medicine offers a collegial, collaborative environment with board-certified experts in allied services such as anesthesia, cardiology, dentistry, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, pathology, primary care, and surgery. A dedicated licensed clinical social worker provides client support.

In 2024, UW Veterinary Care opened a state-of-the-art hospital with advanced interventional radiology and endoscopy equipment, including Olympus flexible endoscopes, Storz rigid and resectoscope systems, Ho:YAG, CO₂, and diode lasers, PET/CT imaging, a dedicated endoscopy/laparoscopy OR, a vascular IR suite, and standing videofluoroscopic swallow study capabilities. Extracorporeal therapies—intermittent hemodialysis, ultrafiltration, plasmapheresis, and hemoperfusion—are offered jointly with the Emergency and Critical Care service. SAIM also treats 1–3 cats weekly with I-131.

Extensive opportunities for collaborative research and teaching exist within the School of Veterinary Medicine and across the UW-Madison campus, including the School of Medicine & Public Health, College of Agriculture & Life Sciences, School of Pharmacy, Biotechnology Center, School of Education, and the Wisconsin State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.

Responsibilities

• Clinical Responsibilities:
  • Up to 20 weeks of clinical coverage and teaching, including training and supervision of residents and interns.
  • Clinical teaching of fourth-year veterinary students.
  • Supervision, training, and performance of endoscopy and other interventional procedures.
• Non-Clinical Teaching Responsibilities:
  • Didactic teaching within the preclinical and house officer curricula, including leading and attending rounds, laboratory course teaching, and mentorship of interns and residents.
• Research Responsibilities:
  • Perform clinical research in the SAIM section, including mentorship of house officers and graduate students in research projects.
• Service Responsibilities:
  • Participation in committees at the department, school, university, and professional organization levels.
  • Involvement in continuing education programs for veterinary practitioners in Wisconsin.

Requirements

• DVM or equivalent degree (required by start date).
• Board certification or board eligibility in Small Animal Internal Medicine (required by start date).
• Demonstrated commitment to teaching and clinical instruction of DVM students, interns, and residents.
• Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills for coordination with other hospital services.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior academic experience beyond residency training (or equivalent experience in a specialty practice setting).
• Experience in interventional procedures beyond standard endoscopy.
