Basic Function and Scope of Responsibilities
Coordination of enhancing student success by adapting to the classroom and testing demands of LIU’s Department of Nursing. The role involves developing and running academic support sessions that focus on test-taking strategies, the nursing process, nursing content, and study skills. Sessions may range in numbers depending on student learning needs. Frequent one-to-one sessions may be required to address content learning issues and/or problems with test-taking anxiety.
Principal Responsibilities
- Attend pertinent classes at the beginning of each semester to review with students the available resources and introduce test-taking strategies.
- Offer end-of-semester ATI review sessions for Sophomore and Junior nursing students.
- Offer weekly ATI content review sessions for seniors.
- Provide course-specific test-taking question and answer sessions and strategies to undergraduate nursing students.
- Develop and maintain policy and procedures for remediation
- Remain informed of all changes in NCLEX (NextGen) test procedures.
- Attend the NCLEX conference yearly.
- Offer orientation as needed to faculty with respect to ATI and remediation.
- Support faculty in developing test-taking strategies, clinical case development, policy and procedure development, remediation skills, and other areas, as needed.
- Maintain records of attendance at all workshops, remediation, and test-taking sessions.
- Remain an active member of the Academic Standing Committee and a supportive resource during appeal meetings and decisions.
- Proctor ATI and course exams, as needed
- Maintains Partial nursing faculty teaching assignment in the coach’s area of expertise as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Conducts math reviews at the beginning of each semester
- Research and adopt new strategies for students to handle test-taking anxiety
Education Requirements
- Master’s degree in nursing or nursing education, or related field required. Prior experience in higher education remediation support is preferred.
Training, Skills, Knowledge, Experience
- At least 2 years of experience in related academic or clinical experience.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills with proven strength in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Blackboard learning management system software.
- Highly proficient in ATI testing software functions and reports.
- Must be able to identify learning gaps via analysis of student performance and develop action plans to bridge those gaps.
Working Conditions
- Flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, may be required to execute the role. Generally, follows established protocols, but may need to respond appropriately to unforeseen and highly stressful situations.
- Proven ability to function with minimal direct supervision.
