Assistant Professor of Spanish
About the role
Johnson County Community College is seeking an Assistant Professor of Spanish to join the Foreign Language Department. The successful candidate will teach Elementary, Intermediate, Heritage Speaker, Spanish for Hospitality, and Conversational Spanish courses.
Responsibilities
- Teach the equivalent of 15 credit hours per semester in Spanish.
- Perform other duties expected of full-time faculty, including maintaining scheduled office hours; developing and revising curriculum; developing and implementing course and program assessment of student learning outcomes; participating in department, division and college meetings; serving on committees; collaborating with and observing adjunct faculty teaching Spanish and other languages; collaborating and working successfully with other full-time faculty in the Foreign Language department; and other duties as assigned.
- Provide extra and co-curricular opportunities for Spanish language students, participate in the planning and administration of all departmental initiatives, and participate in on-campus and off-campus events promoting languages.
Requirements
- M.A. in Spanish or an MA in a related discipline with at least 18 hours of graduate work in Spanish as required by JCCC HLC criteria.
- Demonstrated 2 years of teaching experience at the post-secondary level and/or high school teaching experience.
- Demonstrated ability to teach Elementary and Intermediate level Spanish language courses.
- Demonstrated excellent communication and collaboration skills, as provided by supervisor and colleagues’ letters of reference.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Spanish, Language Pedagogy, Second Language Acquisition, or Linguistics with a focus on the Spanish language.
- Experience in teaching heritage speakers of Spanish.
- Ability to work well and collaborate with others.
- Ability to work independently on departmental initiatives.
- Familiarity with proficiency-based language learning.
