Assistant Professor of Psychology

About the role

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, located in the Appalachian Mountains of Southwest Virginia, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Psychology in the Department of Social Sciences. We seek a collaborative, student-centered teacher, scholar, and clinician who is committed to preparing undergraduate students for graduate education and careers in psychology. The successful candidate will contribute to the Psychology program through undergraduate teaching, academic advising and mentoring, research and scholarship, and service to the department and College. A distinctive component of the position is the opportunity to provide clinical instruction and supervision to undergraduate students as they develop and apply foundational counseling and clinical skills while delivering services under professional supervision. This is a nine-month appointment that will begin in Fall 2027 and is located on the UVA Wise campus in Wise, Virginia.

Minimum Qualifications

• PhD or PsyD in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA-accredited doctoral program.
• ABD candidates will be considered if their degree is conferred by August 2027.
• Must either hold an active license to practice psychology in the Commonwealth of Virginia or be eligible for Virginia licensure. A candidate who is not licensed at the time of appointment must obtain Virginia licensure during the first year of employment.
• Academic and clinical preparation sufficient to provide effective supervision to undergraduate students delivering clinical services and to guide students in meeting applicable ethical, legal, professional, and institutional standards.
• Ability to teach and supervise students in person at the UVA Wise campus.
• Ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and other partners in support of the Psychology program.
• Demonstrated potential for effective undergraduate teaching in a student-centered liberal arts environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• A record of effective teaching at the undergraduate level.
• Experience supervising students, interns, or other trainees who provide clinical or counseling services.
• Experience teaching courses in clinical or counseling psychology, including one or more of the courses identified in this posting.
• Experience advising and mentoring undergraduate students who are preparing for graduate education or careers in psychology and related fields.
• Evidence of an active or developing program of research and scholarship.
• Experience integrating applied, experiential, or community-based learning into undergraduate education.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a 4-4 teaching load, consisting of four courses during each fall and spring semester. Teaching assignments will be based on program needs and may include Introduction to Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Counseling Techniques, Theories of Psychotherapy, and other courses within the candidate’s area of expertise.
• Provide clinical instruction and supervision to undergraduate students and assist with student development. Ensure that services are provided in accordance with applicable ethical, legal, professional, and institutional requirements.
• Participate in departmental and College service, including committee work, program assessment, recruitment, curriculum development, and activities that contribute to the continued growth of the Psychology program.
• Support students’ academic and professional development through individualized mentoring, career guidance, and assistance with preparation for graduate study and professional opportunities.
• Maintain an active program of research and scholarship appropriate to a tenure-track appointment at a public liberal arts college.
• Maintain the professional licensure, knowledge, and competencies necessary to fulfill the clinical responsibilities of the position.

Subject to departmental needs, College policies, and applicable approval requirements, scheduling flexibility may be available for outside clinical practice.
