Assistant Professor of Psychology

About the Role

The San Diego State University Department of Psychology seeks to hire a tenure-track assistant professor with expertise in quantitative psychology. The ideal candidate will develop and apply novel quantitative methods to test hypotheses for psychological data collected from experimental, quasi-experimental, intervention/prevention, and/or longitudinal designs. These methods may include machine learning, data mining, artificial intelligence, network analysis, Bayesian estimation, psychometrics, advanced structural equation modeling, or advanced multilevel models.

The successful candidate will collaborate with faculty conducting experimental, quasi-experimental, and intervention/prevention research, applying newly developed statistical methods to real-world empirical datasets. Priority will be given to candidates interested in collaborating across substantive topics such as clinical, social, industrial/organizational, cognitive, and developmental psychology. The department advocates for a teacher-scholar model, balancing teaching and research.

The role includes teaching applied statistics courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels, covering topics such as ANOVA, regression, generalized linear modeling, measurement, structural equation modeling, multilevel modeling, and longitudinal data analysis.

The Psychology Department offers a PhD program in Clinical Psychology (joint with UC San Diego), a research-oriented MS in Applied Psychology (with emphases in industrial/organizational and quantitative methodology), and a research-oriented MA program (with emphases in Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience, Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Physical and/or Mental Health, and Social Psychology).

Responsibilities

• Develop and apply novel quantitative methods to psychological data from experimental, quasi-experimental, intervention/prevention, and/or longitudinal designs.
• Collaborate with faculty across substantive research areas (clinical, social, industrial/organizational, cognitive, and developmental psychology).
• Teach applied statistics courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels, covering topics such as ANOVA, regression, generalized linear modeling, measurement, structural equation modeling, multilevel modeling, and longitudinal data analysis.
• Maintain a vigorous and independent program of research, scholarship, or creative activity.
• Engage in campus and professional service activities.
• Direct advanced undergraduate and graduate student research.

Requirements

• A record of original research, scholarly, or creative accomplishments.
• Demonstrated capacity to:
  • Develop a vigorous and independent program of research, scholarship, or creative activity.
  • Teach graduate and undergraduate courses.
  • Engage in campus and professional service activities.
• Demonstration of past accomplishments and/or future plans in at least two or more of the “Building on Inclusive Excellence” criteria.
• By date of hire: Terminal degree in Psychology or related field, with all degree requirements met.

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated expertise in Quantitative Psychology and its methodologies.
• Record of publications, presentations, and/or funding.
• Proficiency in interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches.
• Potential for securing extramural funding.
• University-level teaching experience.
• Preparation for teaching students from diverse backgrounds.
• Experience with relevant teaching technologies.
• Understanding of the mission and goals of the academic unit and SDSU.

Pay

The minimum salary for this position is based on the current CSU salary schedule and may be revised based on contract collective bargaining. The anticipated salary range is $102K - $107K. Salary placement will be based on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience, with potential for higher offers in limited circumstances.
