Assistant Professor of Geomatics – Cadastral Principles - Land Title, Boundaries, and Surveys
This is a 9-month tenure-accruing position that will be 60% teaching (College of Agricultural and Life Sciences) and 40% extension (Florida Cooperative Extension Service), available in the School of Forest Fisheries and Geomatics Sciences, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, at the University of Florida. This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit. Tenure will accrue in the School of Forest, Fisheries, and Geomatics Sciences (SFFGS). The faculty member will seek contract and grant funding actively to support their program.
Responsibilities
- Design and deliver undergraduate and graduate courses such as Cadastral Principles, Surveying and Mapping Practice, and Geodetic Surveying for Land Management, combining classroom teaching with field components that use boundary-surveying techniques, parcel datasets, and the legal aspects of land administration.
- Mentor students, supervise capstone projects and graduate theses, and support career development for those pursuing surveying or land-administration pathways.
- Contribute to curriculum innovation, development of distance-education modules, and interdisciplinary teaching across the School of Forest, Fisheries, and Geomatics Sciences.
- Create and lead a statewide Extension program focused on cadastral systems, land tenure, and surveying geospatial infrastructure, including delivering workshops, short courses, and hands-on training to local government agencies and private-sector stakeholders.
- Collaborate and support ongoing surveying workforce development efforts.
- Produce Extension publications, technical guides, and policy briefs, and provide technical expertise to initiatives such as map archiving and workforce-development projects.
- Secure extramural funding to sustain and expand Extension activities.
- Actively participate in departmental governance, contribute to curriculum review and accreditation efforts, and engage with professional organizations such as the Florida Surveying and Mapping Society (FSMS) and the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG).
- Collaborate across UF/IFAS units and with external partners to promote interdisciplinary initiatives and support statewide Extension programs.
Requirements
- Ph.D. (or equivalent, foreign equivalent acceptable) in Geomatics, Surveying Engineering, Land Administration, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching and curriculum development.
- Experience in Extension, outreach, or applied engagement with stakeholders.
- Record of obtaining extramural funding.
- Strong communication skills and commitment to the land-grant mission.
- A commitment to UF core values.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional licensure (e.g., Professional Land Surveyor).
- Practicing land surveying in Florida or other US states.
- Knowledge of Florida cadastral systems, property law, and parcel standards.
- Experience with related technologies such as blockchain land registries and modern GNSS, lidar, and drone-based mapping systems.
- Familiarity with geospatial data infrastructure.
