Assistant Professor of Engineering - Tenure-track

About the role

Southwestern University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Engineering to begin in August 2027. The successful candidate will join a small, collaborative engineering faculty and contribute meaningfully to program assessment, continuous improvement, and the ABET accreditation process for the newly launched B.S. in Engineering. The standard teaching load is five courses a year, along with departmental responsibilities, advising, university service, and participation in the University’s First-Year Seminar Program.

Responsibilities

• Teach introductory-level physics and engineering courses as well as upper-level engineering courses
• Develop two specialty courses in a specific area of interest
• Engage in interdisciplinary collaboration and excellence in teaching undergraduate courses
• Contribute to program assessment, continuous improvement, and the ABET accreditation process

Requirements

• Ph.D. in an engineering discipline (must be completed by August 1, 2027; ABD candidates will be considered)
• Commitment to teaching and research in an undergraduate-only liberal arts college environment
• Ability to engage undergraduate researchers in a research program

Qualifications

We welcome candidates with research programs in any engineering area, though those aligned with advanced manufacturing (advanced CAD, rapid prototyping, etc.), systems design, and control systems are particularly encouraged. Prior experience with ABET-accredited engineering programs — as a student, faculty member, or in another capacity — is preferred but not required.

Benefits

• Starting annual salary for 9-month position: $80,000 (final offer may exceed this figure based on experience)
• Opportunity to supplement income through summer teaching or competitive Southwestern Undergraduate Research with Faculty (SURF) funding
