Assistant Professor of Biochemistry - Neuroscience

About the role

The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience at the assistant professor level. Under exceptional circumstances, highly qualified candidates at other ranks may be considered. The successful candidate will join the Institute for Applied Life Sciences (IALS), contributing to translational research, industry interactions, and workforce training. The role complements existing departmental strengths in synapse biology, learning and memory, and neurodegeneration, and will have access to IALS core facilities. The position is based in a standard office/indoor university environment with minimal physical exertion, and the university emphasizes inclusive excellence and alignment with the CNS Inclusive Excellence framework and the UMass Amherst “For the Common Good: 2024–2034” Strategic Plan.

Responsibilities

• Conduct research on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of brain development, aging, and neurological disorders using molecular, biochemical, genetic, and cellular approaches in specific models or systems, with translation to human health and disease.
• Build a vibrant, externally funded, active research program.
• Teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students effectively.
• Contribute to service in support of the department and college.
• Work collaboratively to promote teamwork, equality, and inclusiveness.
• Partner with colleagues within the CNS community and across campus to support the Dean’s strategic priorities.
• Perform other duties as assigned in support of the College of Natural Sciences mission and goals.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. or equivalent in Life Sciences or a related field.
• Relevant post‑doctoral experience.
• Qualified for an assistant professor position; under exceptional circumstances, highly qualified candidates at other ranks may be considered.

Schedule

Full‑time, on‑site position (9‑month academic year). Anticipated start date: September 1, 2027. Standard work schedule: Monday‑Friday, 40 hours per week.

Pay

The University expects to pay within an approximate range of $79,350 to $125,349 for this position. The low end reflects the minimum salary for the rank in the collective bargaining agreement; the high end reflects an increase above the median salary for faculty with multiple years of experience in the department. Specific pay will be determined based on rank, relevant certifications, and other factors.
