About the role

The Department of Education at Southwestern University invites applications for a part-time Instructor/Professor to teach Survey of Exceptionalities in Spring 2027.

Responsibilities

  • Explore the range of human experiences of individuals with exceptionalities (including those who are gifted and/or have learning, mental, physical, emotional, or sensory disabilities) and their families.
  • Examine cross-cultural perspectives on disability, historical and legal foundations, and contemporary issues in education.
  • Emphasize how social responses shape quality of life and educational access.
  • Incorporate application-based learning (e.g., dyslexia simulations and gifted/talented identification activities).
  • Require 15 hours of field experience.
  • Teach the course in a rigorous, practical, and inclusive manner.
  • Lead and support application-based activities and field-experience requirements.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Special Education, Educational Psychology, Curriculum & Instruction, Inclusive Education, or closely related field.
  • Ph.D./Ed.D. preferred.
  • Knowledge of disability-related law and educational practice (e.g., IDEA, Section 504, ADA, IEP/504 processes, LRE/inclusion).
  • Experience teaching or supporting inclusive practices, accommodations, differentiation, and collaboration with families/professionals.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Special Education, Educational Psychology, Curriculum & Instruction, Inclusive Education, or closely related field.
  • Ph.D./Ed.D. preferred.
  • Knowledge of disability-related law and educational practice (e.g., IDEA, Section 504, ADA, IEP/504 processes, LRE/inclusion).
  • Experience teaching or supporting inclusive practices, accommodations, differentiation, and collaboration with families/professionals.
  • Ability to lead application-based activities and supervise/support field-experience requirements.

Skills

  • Ability to teach in an inclusive education context.
  • Understanding of disability studies perspectives.
  • Legal/ethical responsibilities in education.

Benefits

Non-benefitted position.

Pay

  • $4,200 (terminal degree in-hand by January 1)
  • $3,900 (Master’s degree in-hand by January 1)

Schedule

Part-time Instructor/Professor position.
