Cal Poly’s Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering (IME) Department invites applications for a full-time, academic-year, tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning approximately August 12, 2027. About the Department
The IME Department houses both Industrial Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering programs, emphasizing hands-on, laboratory-intensive curricula. The department includes 13 tenured and tenure-track faculty, 5 full-time lecturers, and approximately 10 part-time lecturers dedicated to teaching, applied research, and student mentorship.
Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate and master’s-level courses in industrial engineering, with a focus on data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI).
- Support and expand curricular development in industrial engineering.
- Develop and maintain an externally funded, applied research program involving undergraduate and graduate students, as well as partnerships with key stakeholders.
- Engage in high-quality scholarly work, as evidenced by external peer review.
- Perform service activities at all levels of the university.
- Foster a collaborative, multidisciplinary, and inclusive learning environment.
Requirements
- Earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in industrial engineering, operations research, or a closely related field from an accredited institution (or international equivalent) by the start of the appointment. ABD candidates nearing completion will be considered.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching, effective communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively with students, staff, and faculty from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Ability to develop an externally funded, applied research program involving students and stakeholders.
- Commitment to hands-on, student-centered learning and teaching.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary settings.
- Proficiency in written and oral English.
Preferred Qualifications
- Excellence in university-level teaching and research (commensurate with time since degree).
- Experience with laboratory-based instruction.
- Industry experience.
- Experience working with diverse populations and fostering an inclusive environment.
Special Conditions
- The successful candidate will be designated as a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and must comply with CSU Executive Order 1083.
- A background check, including a criminal records check, is required prior to employment.
- Faculty seeking permanent residency must retain their own immigration attorney; all fees are the responsibility of the faculty member.
- Cal Poly is a smoke- and tobacco-free campus.
- Tenure-line faculty are expected to establish an on-campus presence.
- Subject to further planning, Cal Poly may transition to semester-based year-round operations (YRO), where faculty may teach in two consecutive semesters (e.g., Fall/Spring) with potential for additional compensation in the third semester.
Pay
Anticipated hiring range: $106,000 – $117,000 per year.
