About the College

The David Nazarian College of Business and Economics serves over 7,000 students and is one of the largest business schools in the nation, accredited by AACSB International. It houses the premier Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) clinic, top-ranked programs in accounting, finance, and financial planning, and new programs in entrepreneurship and business analytics.

About the Department

The Department of Finance, Financial Planning, and Insurance offers a comprehensive curriculum, including a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) with specializations in Financial Analysis, Financial Planning, and Risk Management and Insurance, as well as a Master of Business Administration (MBA) program. The department serves over 1,000 students and fosters student engagement through initiatives like the FMA - CSUN chapter and student-centered investment funds managed by undergraduates.

The department consists of 13 full-time tenure-track faculty members dedicated to advancing research and delivering a comprehensive curriculum. Faculty are active scholars with publications in leading journals such as the Journal of Finance, Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Risk and Insurance, Journal of Accounting Research, and Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis. The department provides access to leading research databases, including Wharton Research Data Services (WRDS), and other resources like BOX, AWS, Qualtrics, SPSS, Matlab, Mathematica, and Camtasia.

About the Role

The Department of Finance, Financial Planning, and Insurance at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is seeking a tenure-track faculty member in Financial Planning at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will primarily teach Financial Planning and conduct research in Financial Planning and related fields. The new hire will be actively involved in the CFP Board-registered financial planning program.

Responsibilities

• Teach Financial Planning courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate level (both in-person and online).
• Hold weekly office hours.
• Attend faculty meetings and participate in the assessment of student learning.
• Engage in service to the department, college, and university.
• Conduct and publish original research in finance or financial planning.
• Contribute to equitable academic outcomes for all students through teaching, mentorship, scholarship, and service.
• Support the department’s mission of fostering a rich learning environment and student engagement.

Teaching Load

The normal teaching load is twelve hours per week. However, faculty actively engaged in research and publication may receive a reduced load of nine hours per week (SA status according to AACSB standards).

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Financial Planning or a related field (e.g., Finance, Personal Finance, or a field with demonstrated connection to financial planning or finance) from an accredited institution by the time of appointment.
• Evidence of, or clear potential for, conducting and publishing original research in finance or financial planning.
• Evidence of, or clear potential for, excellence in university-level teaching (both in-person and online) in financial planning-related areas.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience engaging with a diverse student body or potential to do so.
• Experience using culturally responsive pedagogy that leads to equitable outcomes for all students.
• Experience creating a student-centered learning environment.
• Experience adopting inclusive approaches to mentoring.
• Evidence of, or clear potential for, impactful research in financial planning.

Pay

Salary range: $140,000 to $158,000 (dependent upon qualifications).

Initial interviews will be conducted at the CFP Board Conference in Las Vegas (October 5-7, 2026), with a Zoom option available for those not attending. Campus visits will follow for selected candidates.
