The department welcomes applicants with an interest in applying engineering tools and technologies to investigate and/or control cell and tissue behavior for technological and therapeutic applications. We especially seek candidates eager to address emerging needs at the interface of the engineering and biomedical sciences, including but not limited to: controlling complex and dynamic cell-material interfaces in vitro and vivo; integrating cell/tissue engineering systems with molecular, systems-level measurements and screens; improving scaleup of cell/material-based systems, e.g. through additive manufacturing technologies; creating and applying computational tools (including AI/ML) to facilitate the development and deployment of cell engineering and regenerative medicine technologies; and developing advanced, biomimetic culture technologies for measurement, modeling, and therapeutic development. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to interface with and participate in aligned interdisciplinary organizations on the Berkeley campus, including QB3-Berkeley, the Berkeley Stem Cell Center, the Innovative Genomics Institute, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and more. In addition to strong ties with other departments in the College of Engineering, the Department enjoys close relationships with the faculty of biological sciences, physics and chemistry at UC Berkeley, as well as the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Faculty in Bioengineering are also active participants in the Center for Computational Biology and the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society, as well as active users of the extensive computational resources on campus and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. This exceptional environment for teaching and research in the rapidly growing field of biotechnology will provide the successful candidate with unique opportunities for intellectual, technological, and pedagogical leadership.
