About the Role

The Department of Human Development and Family Science (HDFS) at East Carolina University (ECU) invites applications for a nine-month tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 2027 in the program areas of Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) and Medical Family Therapy (MedFT). The successful candidate will demonstrate innovation and excellence in scholarship, research, teaching, clinical supervision, and the application of knowledge.

The Department of Human Development and Family Science is one of 12 academic units in the College of Health and Human Sciences. It offers four undergraduate programs (Family and Community Services, Birth-Kindergarten Teacher Education, Family and Consumer Sciences Education, and Child Life), two master’s programs (Human Development and Family Science, Marriage and Family Therapy), and a Ph.D. program in Medical Family Therapy. The department houses the Nancy W. Darden Child Development Center, the Redditt House: Medical Family Therapy Research Academy, and the ECU Family Therapy Clinic. The Medical Family Therapy program is the first of its kind in the nation, and the MFT program was the first to be COAMFTE accredited in North Carolina.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain an active research agenda and pursue external funding opportunities.
• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in established areas of expertise.
• Supervise master’s and doctoral students in the Medical Family Therapy (MedFT) and Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) programs.
• Chair theses and dissertations and serve as an advisor and mentor to MedFT/MFT students.
• Provide meaningful service to the profession, university, and broader community.
• Foster a collegial, collaborative, and supportive environment through effective engagement with students, staff, faculty, and administrators.

Requirements

• Earned PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy, Medical Family Therapy, or related field (e.g., Psychology or Counseling) from a regionally accredited institution. Candidates with the PhD conferred at the time of initial appointment will hold the probationary rank of Assistant Professor. ABD candidates will also be initially appointed with the probationary term rank of Assistant Professor and must have the terminal degree conferred prior to their first reappointment.
• Demonstrated commitment to excellence in research, grant writing, teaching, clinical supervision, and professional service.
• Eligible for North Carolina licensure; AAMFT Approved Supervisor or AAMFT Approved Supervisor Candidate.

Preferred Qualifications

• Research experience aligning with or adjacent to Medical Family Therapy.
• Supervision and/or clinical experience in integrated or healthcare settings.
• History of successfully acquiring external grant funding.
• Experience with creating/maintaining community and/or interdisciplinary collaborations.

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Most positions at East Carolina University require employees to live and work in North Carolina (or within a reasonable daily commuting distance from their duty station) after hire.
