About the role

The Civil Engineering Department and the Water Engineering Research Center (WERC) in College of Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in water resources engineering with an emphasis on modeling-based hydro informatics, flood forecasting/early warning, urban flooding, radar/satellite precipitation, Artificial Intelligence, and resilient infrastructure systems.

Responsibilities

  • Research and Scholarly Leadership: Establish a high-impact, externally funded research program in Texas’ water resources/hydrology, flood forecasting, flood mitigation, etc. Advance research in one or more of the following areas (aligned with WERC’s priorities): Urban hydrology, hydroinformatics and smart-city water systems, Flood forecasting, inundation modeling, and flood early warning/alert systems, Radar- and satellite-based precipitation, reanalysis, and QPE/QPF data processing, Hydrologic/hydraulic/hydrodynamic modeling and stormwater and drainage networks, GeoAI, remote sensing, GIS, UAV sensing and terrain mapping for flood applications, Climate and extreme-event impacts, resilience, nature-based solutions, and sustainability. Produce impactful journal articles and meaningful technical deliverables (e.g., guidance documents, statewide products, operational platforms, etc.). Collaborate with agencies and stakeholders (e.g., Texas Water Development Boards (TWDB), Texas Department of Emergency Management (TDEM), Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), etc.) and build interdisciplinary teams.

  • Teaching and Mentoring: Teach and develop undergraduate and graduate courses in hydrology, water resources systems, hydrologic/hydraulic modeling, GIS/remote sensing, and data-driven methods. Mentor MS/PhD students and supervise research staff/postdocs; support student professional development and publication.

  • Service and Professional Engagement: Provide services to the WERC /department/college through committees and program support. Engage in professional services such as peer review, conference leadership, and society participation (e.g., AGU/ASCE/AWRA). Support community and stakeholder engagements related to flood mitigation and water resilience.

Requirements

  • Earned Ph.D. in Water Resources Engineering, Civil/Environmental Engineering, Hydrology, or a closely related field by the start date.

  • Demonstrated potential for developing an independent, externally funded research program.

  • Evidence of peer-reviewed scholarly publications and strong communication skills.

  • Knowledge and experience of Texas’ water resources, flood forecasting, flood mitigation, etc.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Research expertise aligned with urban flooding, flood warning systems, hydro informatics, radar/satellite precipitation, hydrologic/hydraulic/hydrodynamic modeling, and/or UAV/remote sensing applications.

  • Established externally funded research record in the state of Texas.

  • A track record of both peer-reviewed scholar journals and impactful technical deliverables.

  • Experience supporting research center in strategic planning and operations.

  • Demonstrated experience developing real-time/operational flood information systems and decision-support tools.

  • Experience working with government agencies and applied research programs, including statewide or regional initiatives.

  • Strong computational background (e.g., Python/MATLAB/R/C++/C#) and familiarity with common water modeling platforms (e.g., HEC-HMS/HEC-RAS, MODFLOW, SWMM/XP-SWMM, RiverWare, ArcGIS).

  • Professional licensure (e.g., P.E.) and/or demonstrated applied engineering capability.
