About the role

To assist customers in their shopping experience by leading the Produce team in a way that promotes growth for the company and delivers the product and service Cosentino customers expect.

This is a non-exempt position that formally reports to the Produce Manager.

Requirements

  • Obtain a food handling permit within the first 14 days of employment.
  • Minimum of 1 year of previous experience in retail produce management.
  • Completion of ongoing training and development as listed on the Cosentino Learning Plan.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • In the absence of the Produce Manager, provide direct supervision of the Produce team to ensure operational effectiveness, motivation, and respect.
  • Promote a positive team atmosphere through cooperation, teamwork, high morale, and recognition for a job well done.
  • Support the Produce Manager in coaching, corrective actions, and performance evaluations to improve team performance.
  • Assist in addressing employee relations issues and work with the Human Resource team to resolve them when needed.
  • Resolve customer complaints professionally and escalate to store management when appropriate.
  • Implement Cosentino Customer Service Standards.
  • Manage inventory processes, including counting, tracking, planning, and ordering product accurately.
  • Promote new items and weekly specials through merchandising and creative displays.
  • Answer customer questions accurately by being knowledgeable about department products, procedures, and policies.
  • Meet or exceed productivity standards for team and individual results.
  • Inspect product for freshness, damage, and dates; use proper rotation techniques.
  • Remove damaged, unsaleable, or returnable products from shelves and follow proper damage claim procedures.
  • Label or price merchandise and obtain price signs when necessary.
  • Operate, clean, and maintain all equipment safely and competently.
  • Comply with and ensure team compliance with all health regulations, sanitation guidelines, and safety procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area for customers and coworkers.
  • Assist the Produce Manager in conducting interviews to hire quality candidates.
  • Help manage labor costs to balance customer service needs with company expenditures.
  • Prepare, package, and display all products in the produce department.
  • Unload and sort incoming shipments, stocking them neatly without damaging merchandise.
  • Promote sales by suggesting additional products or services.
  • Complete additional tasks identified by management, assist other stores or departments as needed, and gain new skills.

Skills

  • Strong verbal and interpersonal skills for positive customer and peer interactions.
  • Basic math and reading skills required for the position.

Physical Abilities

  • Reaching overhead with both arms up to 72 inches and lifting objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Pushing and pulling grocery items with peak force up to 50 lbs.
  • Standing and walking for long periods on hard surfaces (tile, asphalt, concrete).
  • Occasionally lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Bending and squatting, sometimes to floor level.
  • Working in cold conditions, such as grocery coolers and freezers.
  • Climbing a ladder up to 5 ft (non-essential).
