About the role

This profile is for tenure-line faculty at the University of Virginia. Tenure is an appointment without term. Tenure-eligible and tenured faculty are full-time, salaried, hold a professorial rank (assistant professor, associate professor, or professor), and must be elected by the Board of Visitors. In the School of Medicine, tenure-line faculty hold Academic Appointments on one of three tracks:

  • Academic Investigator
  • Clinical Investigator
  • Clinical Educator

Personnel actions are governed by EVPP and policy PROV-017: Employment of Tenure-line Faculty. Only associate professors and professors can hold tenure; tenure-eligible assistant professors or associate professors achieve tenure after a probationary period and promotion review, per school policies and with provost and Board of Visitors approval.

Responsibilities

  • Investment and effectiveness in student education and development
  • Achievement in scholarship, research, and/or creative work
  • Service contributions to the University, profession, and/or the public

Specific expectations vary by school and are described in local school policies; schools may add expectations for faculty with other documented responsibilities.

Requirements

Only schools and academic departments can host tenure-line faculty (not programs, centers, institutes, or other non-school reporting units). Physical requirements vary but may include:

  • Traveling to and from work location, other UVA or UVA Health facilities, or to other locations in the U.S. or abroad for meetings or research
  • Using computers, specialized equipment, and other technologies
  • Remaining stationary, moving, bending, lifting, and reaching
  • Performing procedures using fine motor skills
  • Communicating effectively, in writing, in person, in the classroom, online, and in clinical settings
  • Interacting with others such as colleagues, other academic and medical peers, students, patients, and the public
