Assistant Machine Operator role focused on safely assisting in the operation of production machines, including setup, operation, cleanup, and process improvements to meet customer demand.

Responsibilities

  • Work safely at all times, comply with Pratt Industries Safety rules, and participate in the Plant Safety Committee.
  • Follow Good Manufacturing Processes (GMPs) and comply with quality procedures to prevent poor quality from reaching customers.
  • Assist the Machine Operator in maximizing equipment utilization by operating machinery at available capacity and speed.
  • Improve setup times and reduce downtime daily; identify and report mechanical concerns.
  • Maintain clean and hazard-free work areas, including break rooms, bathrooms, and shared spaces.
  • Learn machine capabilities, drive efficiencies, and minimize waste without sacrificing quality.
  • Cross-train on other machines and positions within the plant.
  • Assist in completing accurate and timely reports (production, safety, quality, and operational data).
  • Submit maintenance work orders proactively and maintain equipment housekeeping.
  • Collaborate with co-workers to switch duties as needed for plant growth and personal development.
  • Adhere to production schedules, optimize for cost/quality/service, and report scheduling issues.
  • Work overtime as necessary, including short-notice and holiday shifts, to support 24/7 customer operations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Preferred: Prior work experience in packaging (paper, plastics, converting) or 6+ months in manufacturing.
  • Able to read and follow instructions (quality, safety, job packets).
  • Proficient in reading a tape measure quickly and accurately; able to calculate percentages, measurements, volume, and rates.
  • Ability to apply common sense to carry out written, oral, or graphic instructions and solve problems with concrete variables.
  • May require a current Lift Truck Operator License.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, talk, or hear; frequently use hands to handle or feel objects/tools.
  • Frequently reach with hands/arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Occasionally sit; must regularly lift/move up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception, with ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

  • Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts and wet/humid conditions.
  • Occasional exposure to high places, fumes, airborne particles, and vibration.
  • Loud noise levels typical of the work environment.
