In the maritime industry, where colossal ships dock and millions of tons of cargo are moved with precision, you play a part in ensuring the pulse of commerce never skips a beat. As an Assistant Operations Manager, you’ll help lead teams in maintaining high standards of operational efficiency while prioritizing the safety of all team members. This role requires flexibility to adapt to changing operational needs and schedules, with opportunities to grow professionally while serving communities across over 33 ports and 70 locations on all three coasts.
Responsibilities
- Effectively manage the work activities of Foremen, Labor, and other personnel to meet performance expectations and customer needs.
- Determine daily labor requirements and ensure appropriate labor is ordered for your assigned area.
- Make decisions on overtime costs and general expenditures in the best interests of the company and customers.
- Assess additional staffing needs and coordinate with appropriate representatives to ensure cost-effective staffing and availability.
- Ensure payroll accuracy and make necessary adjustments.
- Enforce compliance with the company’s Safety program and ensure all labor and staff adhere to accident prevention, safety, and workers' compensation programs.
- Collaborate with Maintenance & Repair (M&R) and Terminal Departments to allocate equipment based on operational demands.
- Maintain positive labor relations and ensure adherence to Collective Bargaining Agreements.
- Address performance issues of supervised employees and impose corrective action or discipline when warranted.
- Advise leadership on labor matters and assist in adjudicating complaints, including grievances.
- Participate in regular training and provide feedback to labor and management staff.
- Communicate accountability and performance expectations to labor and management staff.
- Develop, maintain, and improve operating and administrative procedures to facilitate internal practices and meet area objectives.
- Ensure certifications, required training, and clearances are current for you and your staff.
- Ensure compliance with all company policies, procedures, and controls, and submit required reports accurately and on time.
- Work a flexible schedule, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays, as dictated by business needs.
- Travel to support other operations as needed.
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
Physical Working Attributes
- Climb up and down a ladder on a vessel multiple times within a shift.
- Work on ships and terminals with engine-powered equipment.
- Work in changing hot and cold climates based on weather conditions.
- Operate in environments that may be hazardous to individuals unable to see or hear fast-moving equipment.
- Lift, push, and/or pull up to 30 lbs.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 2+ years of experience with computerized operating systems, MS Office, or related technologies.
- 2+ years of management, leadership, and/or supervisory experience.
- Obtain and maintain a Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC) issued by the Department of Homeland Security.
- Valid US Driver’s License.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations.
- Understanding of cargo stowage and stability.
- Proficiency in MS Office.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage time efficiently and execute in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong planning and organizational skills to ensure efficient execution of plans.
- Ability to drive and influence the performance of others.
- Capacity to make sound decisions and respond quickly to operational issues.
