About the Role

The Assistant Nurse Manager manages resources and delegates as appropriate to optimize achievement of unit scope and department objectives. Assists in the operations management of the unit, promotes staff retention through recognition and teamwork, supports professional development of nursing staff, and ensures optimal patient care standards. Facilitates collaborative relationships between medical and hospital staff.

Supervises Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and/or other support staff in the delivery of patient care as described in Nebraska Statute 38.

Responsibilities

  • Partners with the Nurse Manager in developing and implementing the operations budget, including reporting and analyzing operational variances.
  • Takes a leadership role in modeling the mission, beliefs, and behaviors of the Medical Center; promotes effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Assists in resolving patient, family, and/or physician concerns and complaints; collaborates with the Nurse Manager to ensure daily leader/patient rounding.
  • Assists the Nurse Manager in staffing the unit for safe and efficient patient care, adhering to the staffing plan.
  • Reviews unit activity and monitors staffing levels on a shift basis to ensure quality patient care and cost effectiveness.
  • Participates in interviewing and hiring staff; promotes recognition and retention of staff.
  • Conducts timely staff performance appraisals, emphasizing staff competence and retention through coaching and development.
  • Ensures adherence to existing policies and procedures during daily interactions; facilitates patient admissions, discharges, and transfers.
  • Makes staff assignments in accordance with personnel scope of practice to meet patient needs.
  • Defines, delegates, and ensures completion of assignments throughout the shift; provides timely feedback to staff.
  • Collaborates with other supervisory personnel to resolve staffing, patient care, and physician/family concerns.
  • Assists and supports the Nurse Manager with communicating and implementing unit/area changes.
  • Supports and facilitates the preceptor program, new employee orientation, and student programs; communicates education and competency needs to the Nurse Manager.
  • Keeps the Nurse Manager informed of day-to-day operational needs and issues.
  • Coaches staff objectively and constructively when practice or safety issues arise; documents corrective actions and reviews with staff as needed.
  • Takes patient care assignments or charge role during volume or acuity changes or increased staffing demand.

Requirements

  • Current Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska or approved compact state of residence as defined by the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act.
  • Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing preferred.
  • Certification in specialty preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience managing patient populations consistent with the area of assignment.
  • Charge/supervisory experience preferred.
