About the Role

Provides supervision of the daily operations and work activities of professional nursing and ancillary services staff on assigned unit. Supports ongoing operations of department/unit independently as needed and provides direct patient care as required.

Responsibilities

  • In the absence of the Nurse Manager (NM), assumes roles and responsibilities of the NM or applicable “one up” position.
  • Supports adequate staffing levels and skill mix for all shifts by developing, preparing, and maintaining staffing schedules that meet department/unit needs and adapt to variable census conditions. Makes appropriate adjustments/assignments to maximize timely patient care and anticipates future staffing needs.
  • Oversees the delivery of patient care. Directs and delegates patient care assignments to staff based on patient acuity, staff availability, and patient safety.
  • Ensures current competency of all staff and confirms compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Serves in charge capacity when needed.
  • Actively participates in the performance appraisal process, holds staff accountable for performance standards, and mediates staff conflicts.
  • Collaborates with the Nurse Manager and Charge Nurse on unit needs (e.g., flow issues, equipment/supplies, documentation, patient satisfaction, and performance).
  • Monitors high-risk and complicated cases and institutes appropriate actions.
  • Identifies and resolves operational problems and barriers impeding care or service on-the-spot, making recommendations for long-term resolution.
  • Anticipates and resolves patient/family concerns in a timely manner, keeping them informed.
  • Protects patient confidentiality and promotes professional staff communications.
  • Serves as a resource and role model/mentor to charge nurses and staff.
  • Assists in selecting, training, orienting, and evaluating staff; prepares work schedules and makes personnel recommendations.
  • Assists in developing budgets.
  • Prepares and maintains written documentation as required by the profession and department.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development principles over the patient lifespan and provides age-specific care.
  • Commits to patient, visitor, and staff safety by complying with safety regulations, reporting errors, and participating in safety programs.
  • Maintains a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment in accordance with hospital standards.
  • Enhances professional growth through educational programs, literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
  • Attends required meetings and serves on committees as requested.
  • Provides outstanding service to all customers, fosters teamwork, and practices fiscal responsibility.

Requirements

  • Diploma, Associate’s, or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN must be earned within 3 years of hire).
  • 3 years of charge/leadership experience (supervisory experience preferred).
  • Licensed Registered Nurse or Registered Nurse Multi-State License upon hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire.
  • Current certification may be required for specific areas of nursing practice:
    • Emergency Care Center – ACLS, PALS
    • Intensive Care Center & MSCC Lead – ACLS, PALS
    • L&D – ACLS, NRP (experienced L&D nurses obtain within 6 months; new L&D nurses within 1 year)
    • NICU – NRP
    • PEDS – PALS
    • PCC/PACU/ENDO – ACLS, PALS
    • Procedural – ACLS
  • Neonatal resuscitation certification, as applicable.

Skills

  • Fully competent Clinical Nurse III.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, conflict resolution, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
