About the Role
Assist the Lead Custodian in overseeing the supervision, planning, assignments, and review of work by custodial staff while performing moderate to heavy cleaning and custodial tasks. This role involves planning, scheduling, assigning, supervising, and coordinating all cleaning and custodial activities at the assigned elementary school location.
Responsibilities
- Administrative and Leadership
- Assist in planning, scheduling, assigning, coordinating, and supervising the work of a moderate-sized group of custodial employees.
- Coordinate, supervise, and assist in setting up furniture for school and facility rentals.
- Train custodial staff on proper work methods, equipment use, and performance expectations.
- Assign equipment, materials, and supplies; order and maintain inventory of cleaning materials.
- Keep records and prepare reports of work accomplished and materials used.
- Meet and confer with school personnel regarding custodial activities.
- Assist the Lead Custodian with planning and conducting safety meetings.
- Safety and Inspection
- Conduct daily inspections of the building and grounds for cleanliness and security.
- Lock and secure the building; check and activate the fire alarm system.
- Ensure safety and security precautions are followed, equipment is used properly, and work standards are maintained.
- Report damage, vandalism, or unsafe conditions to proper authorities.
- Check expiration dates on fire extinguishers and report for maintenance.
- Operational
- Perform custodial tasks such as flooring, sanitizing, dusting, and common area cleaning alongside staff.
- Operate custodial equipment including mops, buffers, vacuum cleaners, shampoo machines, water and carpet extractors, carpet blowers, and automatic floor scrubbers.
- Use specialized equipment such as Kaivac restroom cleaning machines, chair dollies, computers, washers, dryers, pressure washers, and two-way communication devices.
- Maintain grounds by picking up trash, cleaning sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and play areas.
- Patrol, monitor, and clean assigned areas; follow procedures for locking and safeguarding the facility.
- Report maintenance problems and unauthorized individuals in the building.
- Assist with minor repairs such as replacing pencil sharpeners, adjusting desks, and opening lockers.
- Pool Maintenance (Aquatic and Natatorium Centers Only)
- Perform manual water testing for pH, ORP, alkalinity, and calcium hardness to ensure the Automatic Control System is functioning.
- Keep records and prepare reports of work accomplished and materials used.
- Check and record pool readings daily in the pool log.
- Perform basic pool maintenance, deck cleaning, backwashing filters, cleaning strainers, and inspecting pool apparatus.
- Support the pool manager in preparation for swimming events and coordination of pool rentals.
- Sweep, vacuum, and clean the pool.
- Supervisory
- Supervise one or more employees.
- Report on employees’ work hours and performance; schedule and approve leave time.
- Assist the Lead Custodian with coaching, counseling, and resolving employee complaints.
- Partner with the Lead Custodian to create disciplinary actions if needed.
- Hold regular meetings to keep staff informed.
- Create and assign work area locations and daily assignments.
- Assist with training and guidance on processes, procedures, and equipment usage.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED (preferred).
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in institutional or building custodial work.
- Ability to work various shifts (days, nights, weekends, and holidays) and locations within the school district, including after-hours and weekend rentals if applicable.
- Ability to communicate, read, write, and follow written and oral instructions in English.
- Ability to schedule, assign, supervise, coordinate, and inspect the work of a moderate-sized custodial staff.
- Demonstrated knowledge of hazards, safety precautions, methods, materials, and practices used in institutional custodial work, including proper use and care of equipment.
- Ability to use cleaning materials and equipment economically, efficiently, and safely.
- Ability to keep accurate records and prepare reports.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, school personnel, students, and the general public.
Physical Requirements
- Work is performed in classrooms, offices, work stations, and meeting rooms.
- Requires occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying items weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Regularly use hands to handle objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
- Requires close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Attendance at conferences and professional development is required.
- Work involves everyday risks and discomforts requiring normal safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties.
- May work prolonged or irregular hours and must maintain emotional control under stress.
- Requires sufficient physical strength, agility, dexterity, and hand-eye-foot coordination to operate custodial equipment, lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds, push/pull equipment up to 70 pounds, and reach or stretch overhead.
- Exposure to potential chemical hazards (cleaning liquids, solvents, solutions), biological hazards (cleaning restrooms), and physical hazards (operating equipment).
- Exposure to dust, fumes, and occasionally adverse weather conditions.
- Frequent use of safety clothing and equipment, and compliance with safety procedures.
- Usage of propane gas and battery-operated equipment.
- Most positions require work during evening/night shifts.
