About the role

Hexrock Climbing is seeking an Assistant Head Setter to join our dynamic team. Our mission is to build an inclusive community where climbing and fitness bring people together. Responsibilities

  • Assist the head setter in managing the setting program including distribution of route difficulty and style for all our facilities and supervising other members of the setting team.
  • Work with the head setter to promote and enforce safety practices for both our climbers and staff.
  • Aid in planning the distribution and density of climbing routes and continuously monitor climber engagement making adjustments as needed.
  • Lead and mentor the route-setting team members in improving their setting skills, creativity, and community engagement.
  • Perform inspections and required maintenance on the walls and gear.
  • Lead a forerunning team and make decisions on safety and grade, referring to the head setter when necessary.
  • Maintain cleanliness of holds, volumes, and walls.
  • Spend time in the climbing areas interacting with climbers.
  • Maintain employee engagement by giving them ownership of specific projects.
  • Assist in gathering feedback for route-setters annual reviews.
  • Be willing to take educational classes related to route setting, working at heights, or management.
  • Set up to 3 days a week and fill in for the head setter as needed.

Requirements

  • 1 year of experience setting rope and boulder.
  • Ability to forerun V6 and 5.12.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Understanding of setter and climber safety.
  • Lead climbing proficiency.
  • Empathetic and effective leadership and communication skills.
  • Understanding of climbers movement across different climber types and skill levels.
  • Must be a team player.
  • Ability to effectively make tweaks and decisions as a leader in forerunning.
  • Ability to give and receive constructive feedback professionally.

Preferred

  • 2+ years of experience setting rope and boulder.
  • USAC L1 or higher.
  • Work at height certification.
  • Ability to forerun V8+ and 5.13+.
  • Competition setting experience.
  • Prior management experience.
  • USAC category or competition chief experience.

Pay

This is a full-time position with an hourly wage ranging from $22-$24/hour, approximately $45,670 – $49,920 per year, depending on experience.

Schedule

We offer a flexible schedule as needed due to business needs and events. Candidates must be able to work on their feet for significant amounts of time, be comfortable on ladders and rope systems for wall setting, and lift 50 pounds as needed.
