Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Associate General Counsel, Litigation and Compliance to join our legal team in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Job Description
This role is ideal for a highly capable attorney with 7+ years of experience in commercial litigation, compliance, or a related legal setting who is excited to work at the intersection of dispute management, proactive risk mitigation, and compliance strategy.
Litigation Responsibilities (50%)
- Manage a portfolio of commercial litigation, pre-litigation disputes, and claims from intake through resolution.
- Oversee and strategically manage outside counsel, including budgeting, staffing, case strategy, performance expectations, and billing review.
- Assess matters early and often, including liability, damages, business exposure, and practical settlement options.
- Prepare and deliver clear, concise case updates for legal leadership and business stakeholders.
- Support the development of litigation strategy through all phases of a matter, including pleadings, fact development, discovery, mediation, dispositive motions, trial readiness, and settlement evaluation.
- Partner with the business to advise on the litigation implications of contractual provisions, risk allocation, dispute resolution clauses, indemnity language, and related commercial terms.
- Provide legal guidance on document preservation, legal holds, e-discovery, information governance, and records management.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support case strategy and defensible outcomes.
- Coordinate internal fact gathering and assist with mediation preparation, settlement negotiations, and post-resolution follow-up, including lessons learned and risk mitigation.
- Track developments across an active litigation docket and help ensure timely, accurate internal reporting.
Compliance Responsibilities (50%)
- Draft, revise, and help manage internal compliance policies, procedures, and governance materials.
- Monitor and assess regulatory changes and emerging legal risks relevant to the company’s operations and industry.
- Support the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the company’s antitrust compliance program and other core compliance initiatives.
- Conduct or support internal investigations, including fact development, witness interviews, documentation review, issue analysis, and remediation planning.
- Partner with HR, internal audit, procurement, sales, operations, and other stakeholders on compliance-related matters.
- Help develop and deliver practical compliance guidance and training materials tailored to business audiences.
- Advise on escalation pathways, issue spotting, and response protocols for potential compliance concerns.
- Aid in compliance reporting, documentation, and follow-up actions to support accountability and program effectiveness.
- Promote a proactive, solutions-oriented compliance culture grounded in ethics, transparency, and operational practicality.
Requirements And Qualifications
- Attorney:
- J.D. from an accredited law school
- Active state bar membership in good standing
- 7 or more years of experience in litigation, compliance, or a similar legal practice
- Significant experience in commercial litigation and/or compliance counseling
- Demonstrated ability to manage outside counsel, including case strategy, budgets, staffing, and performance
- Experience drafting case updates, legal analyses, and executive-ready summaries for internal stakeholders
- Experience actively managing an active docket of litigation and pre-litigation matters
- Experience supporting or participating in mediation and settlement discussions
- Strong understanding of litigation processes, including discovery, motion practice, fact development, and case evaluation
- Familiarity with e-discovery processes, legal holds, and document preservation requirements
- Experience drafting, reviewing, or managing compliance policies, procedures, and internal guidance
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with professionalism
- Proficiency with legal research platforms and tools (such as Westlaw, LexisNexis, Practical Law, or similar)
- Comfort using or learning AI-enabled legal tools for legal research, workflow support, document review, issue spotting, and productivity enhancement
- Ability to synthesize complex legal issues into practical, business-oriented advice
Technical / Professional Skills
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Experience with Microsoft Purview is desired but not required
- Training from a large, top-tier law firm
- Judicial clerkship experience
- Experience supporting antitrust, investigations, or enterprise compliance initiatives in a corporate environment
