Assistant Engineer (Wastewater Industrial Control Systems)

East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) seeks qualified, motivated, and innovative individuals for an Assistant Engineer position to support the Wastewater Department’s Industrial Control Systems (ICS) in the Control Systems Management Section (CSMS). You will join a team of passionate, experienced engineers who support Wastewater Operations and are committed to protecting the San Francisco Bay and serving the public by providing essential services.

About the role

Assistant Engineer is the second-level position in the professional engineering series, reporting to a Senior Electrical Engineer. The role may include direction of lower-level engineers or technical staff in specific project areas. Assignments are under the direct supervision of registered engineers and provide qualifying experience for professional registration.

With further experience and registration, incumbents may qualify for promotions to Associate Control Systems Engineer or Associate Electrical Engineer ($161,412 - $196,200 annually). The position is located at EBMUD’s Wastewater Treatment Plant in Oakland, CA.

About the team

The Wastewater Control System Management Section (CSMS) is part of EBMUD’s Wastewater Department Treatment Division. The Wastewater Department operates the nation’s first municipal wastewater plant that is a net-energy producer, featuring a 10.5-megawatt, biogas-fueled power generation station. EBMUD is implementing an extensive capital improvement program, including converting the existing secondary treatment process to a biological nutrient removal process for seasonal and reliable nutrient reduction.

The Wastewater Treatment Plant treats over 50 million gallons per day, protecting the San Francisco Bay, and produces approximately 8 million gallons per day of recycled water using reverse osmosis membrane technology. CSMS provides control system and communication support to the main wastewater treatment plant, remote pumping plants, wet weather facilities, and recycled water facilities.

Responsibilities

• Perform industrial electrical and control engineering work.
• Apply knowledge of up-to-date and legacy power, instrumentation, and control systems.
• Collaborate with team members to provide timely and efficient service while maintaining effective working relationships.
• Develop, troubleshoot, and maintain distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLC), operator interface terminals (OIT), and network equipment.

Requirements

• Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge and abilities.
• Typically, a bachelor’s degree in an ABET-accredited electrical, control systems, or closely related engineering curriculum or a California EIT Certificate.
• Two years of professional electrical or control systems engineering experience.
• A computer engineering degree and/or related coursework may be considered.
• Must possess the physical ability to perform both office and field duties.
• Must possess a valid California driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.
• Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Skills

• Application development and troubleshooting for distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLC), operator interface terminals (OIT), and network equipment.
• Experience with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Systems (SCADA), Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs), and network routers, switches, and firewalls for LAN and WAN.

Pay

The salary range starts at $11,885 per month, increasing to $12,479, $13,103, $13,758, and $14,446 after 6, 18, 30, and 42 months, respectively.
