This position is located at District 1 in Duluth and may have the flexibility to telework, work a hybrid schedule, or work in the office. The incumbent will be required to make a telework arrangement with their supervisor and will be expected to work in the office as determined by policy and discussion with their supervisor.

About the role

The Assistant District Engineer leads engineering and administrative functions that shape MnDOT’s District 1 project pipelines, including planning, traffic engineering, project management, right of way, and surveying. It provides executive oversight of early project planning and scoping, promotes efficient program development, coordinates work across teams and external partners, and contributes to district-wide management. Overall, the role ensures District 1’s highway improvement program is strategically aligned, fiscally responsible, and ready for successful design and construction.

Responsibilities

  • Lead multidisciplinary transportation program development including planning, traffic analysis, project scoping, environmental review, right of way, and survey coordination.
  • Direct engineering decisions, align resources, and ensure timely, well-coordinated project readiness.
  • Lead and manage organizational initiatives, developing and implementing innovative solutions to complex issues.
  • Lead and motivate direct reports and other staff to accomplish projects or programs.
  • Manage large, complex budgets including allocating resources.
  • Build and maintain relationships with staff, agencies, organizations, and stakeholders through strong oral and written communication.

Requirements

  • Licensure as a professional Engineer with the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience and Interior Design (AELSLAGID).
  • Five years of professional post-registration experience, of which three years must be at the Engineer Principal level or equivalent.
  • Successful candidate must pass past-employer reference checks and criminal history check.

Pay

$53.66 - $76.98 / hourly; $112,042 - $160,734 / annually

Schedule

  • Full-time, unlimited (regular) position.
  • Day shift, Monday - Friday.
  • No travel required.
