Assistant Director of Safety and Security
About the role
Reporting to the Director of Safety and Security, this position is responsible for the leadership and supervision of departmental staff in providing a safe and secure environment for all community members, as well as all University property. The Assistant Director shares the supervision of a professional staff consisting of three sergeants, five security officers, one emergency dispatcher, the Student Safety Team, and the First Response Team.
The Assistant Director’s work schedule will typically be assigned to night shifts and most weekends or be determined by the Director of Safety & Security in support of the department operations.
Responsibilities
- Overseeing critical investigations, both internal and criminal, for the Safety & Security Department
- Overseeing the Safety & Security component of compliance and investigations for a variety of laws, regulations and mandates, including Title IX, Clery, VAWA, and NYS Education Law
- Assisting in developing emergency plans and periodically providing off-hours supervision at key events
- Participating in the on-call Safety & Security administrator duties
- Assisting in providing leadership and vision in securing a safe university environment
- Working closely with the sergeants, security officers, and emergency dispatchers to ensure that all university policies are enforced and procedures/protocols are followed
- Assisting in the responsibility for ensuring that every sergeant and security officer meets the New York State Security Guard Act’s annual training requirements
- Assisting in overseeing crisis training of all sergeants, security officers, and emergency dispatchers
- Developing a close working relationship with the Department of Residence Life, Facilities Operations, and the local Police and Fire/EMS agencies
- Supporting the Director of Safety and Security in assuming on-site command and control in case of an emergency
Staff Supervision
Provides first line supervision for three sergeants, five security officers, one emergency dispatcher, the Student Safety Team, and the First Response Team.
Works with the Director to ensure appropriate outcomes relating to departmental complaints, personnel complaints, disagreements, and appeals.
On-call Supervisor when designated by the Director of Safety and Security.
Coordination with Other Campus Entities
Actively participates and contributes to the Student Life team.
Collaborates with the Office of Intercultural Engagement, Inclusion, and Belonging and Student Life to share insights on operations and training of staff.
Works collaboratively with university departments on event staffing requests.
Serves on a variety of committees.
Works closely with Information Technology, Facilities Operations, and Health & Counseling.
Qualifications
Associate's degree required, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Two to three years of experience at a supervisory level, in the field of campus security, including patrol, investigation, supervision, training, and administration.
Must have experience working with a variety of people and ability to communicate successfully with young adults, faculty, and staff.
NYS Security Guard License required.
Valid driver’s license, good driving history, and meet university standards for driving.
Must pass a detailed background check.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in law enforcement preferred.
Pay
The salary range is $68,000 to $75,000 annually.
