Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Nursing provides direct nursing care to residents to meet both the physical and emotional needs of each resident. They allow residents to function at maximum capabilities and communicate with residents in a respectful, empathetic manner, promoting and maintaining the resident's individuality and rights.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop, oversee, and assist with all staffing schedules for the households.
  • Provide input/develops performance evaluations and recommends actions on employee complaints, resolution, terminations, etc.
  • Develop, maintain, and update written policies and procedures that govern the day-to-day nursing operations of the health center in coordination with Director of Nursing.
  • Make written and oral reports/recommendations to the Director of Nursing as necessary/required, concerning the operation of the nursing staff.
  • Assist in the evaluation of the health care services needed for each resident relative to the level of lifestyle accommodations.
  • Communicates and counsels with residents and family members regarding potential problems, needs, and care plans as appropriate.
  • Serves as a liaison for staff transitions from shift to shift and promotes cooperation between departments.
  • May provide oversight of MDS transmission and completion.
  • Participate in community surveys, inspections, etc. made by authorized government agencies.
  • Oversee infection control programs and reporting.
  • Works with Director of Nursing and other leadership team members on quality assurance performance monitoring.
  • Works with and oversees restorative nursing in coordination with Wellness Director and Director of Nursing.
  • Provide leadership to the team in absence of the DON.
  • Perform other duties as instructed by the Director of Nursing.

Education & Experience

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
  • Minimum of three - five years experience in nursing administration in a geriatric setting
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa

Knowledgeable in nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to long-term care.

Strong supervisory and leadership skills to develop/supervise nursing personnel in a team environment.
