Assistant Director of Food Services

Essential Job Functions

• Assists the Director with the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) annual application for School Nutrition Programs
• Coordinates with the assigned Human Resources (HR) Administrator and Field Supervisors in recommendations for employment and placement of personnel
• Supervises, evaluates, and trains Field Supervisors to ensure departmental goals and federal, state, and local regulations, policies, and procedures are maintained
• Supervises the Special Programs Supervisor and oversees the administration of the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), catering operations, and Free & Reduced-Price Meal Benefits, ensuring program compliance, fiscal integrity, and operational effectiveness
• Coordinates with the assigned HR Administrator and Field Supervisors on employee conflict resolution and the development of training plans
• Trains and assigns Field Supervisors to on-site monitoring visits for the School Breakfast Program and National School Lunch Program
• Evaluates on-site monitoring visits completed by Field Supervisors to ensure completion and consistency across areas, and evaluates data to determine training needs
• Aids in establishing, implementing, and evaluating policies and procedures for quality standards and quality control
• Coordinates with the Training and Support Lead on training, coaching, and performance requirements for Field Supervisors and the Supervisor of Special Programs to support positive outcomes on all audits
• Supports local emergency activities, such as shelter openings, as needed
• Manages the yearly customer survey process
• Develops the department’s Key Performance Indicators, using industry standards, to provide month-to-month and year-to-date comparisons
• Oversees, monitors, and analyzes the results of administrative reviews and recommends corrective actions, as needed
• Maintain collaborative relationships with other CCPS departments, school leadership, and community agencies to achieve mutual goals
• Performs other duties as assigned

Budgetary Responsibility

• Maintains food and labor costs while working within the constraints of the allocated budget
• Maintains vending programs in schools

Report Preparation

• Responsible for Supervisor visit reports
• Food, supply, and labor cost reports
• Additional related reports

Equipment Operation

• Operates personal computer
• Basic office equipment
• Equipment related to Food and Nutrition Services

Physical Demands

• Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time
• Exhibit manual dexterity to use a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal
• To see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids
• Hear, understand speech and speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly at normal levels indoors and on the telephone
• Physical agility to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk, reach overhead, and drive

Work Environment

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an office environment; however, considerable time may be spent in school cafeteria environments
• Noise levels in the office environment are typically quiet to moderate, while noise levels in the school environments are typically moderate to loud
• The employee may work near moving mechanical parts and be exposed to objects that are hot and cold

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

• Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state regulations regarding Child Nutrition Programs
• Demonstrated knowledge of business, financial management, and operational procedures and practices related to large institutional food and nutrition programs
• Demonstrated ability to organize, direct, and ensure food and nutrition operations meet the nutritional needs of students; to coordinate staffing requirements; to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; to plan, organize, and evaluate the work of others; to supervise a large number of personnel in varying assignments; and to provide training to adult learners

Requirements

• Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible experience in school nutrition and/or food service leadership
• Valid Food Safety Certification
• Valid Virginia Driver’s License - This position requires the incumbent to drive
