Assistant Director, Counseling and Wellness

About the role
The Assistant Director of Counseling and Wellness provides counseling services to assist students in maximizing their potential for personal and academic success. This role involves initiating interventions that promote a healthy campus environment and meet the psychological needs of the university community. The Assistant Director will supervise full-time and part-time employees and report to the Director of Counseling and Wellness as an active member of the Student Affairs team.
Responsibilities
- Provides individual and group counseling for personal and academic concerns.
- Conducts intake assessments, screenings, psychological testing, and interpretation.
- Engages in client staffing, case management, consultation, and referral.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates wellness programs and educational outreach activities.
- Provides crisis intervention services and consults with the director when necessary.
- Works collaboratively with colleagues in the counseling center and across the institution.
- Serves a diverse student population in a multicultural environment.
- Engages in professional development activities to enhance skills and maintain licensure.
- Consults with faculty and staff regarding counseling services for students.
- Utilizes computer technology to support counseling functions.
- Provides service to the university through involvement in committees and other activities.
- Completes all other duties as assigned by the Director of Counseling and Wellness.
- Contributes to the effective team management of relevant problems, issues, and opportunities.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, or social work.
- Licensure as an LPC, LCSW, or other mental health professional license in Texas (or ability to obtain).
- Three years of experience in counseling or a related field (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Thorough knowledge of Texas rules and regulations related to the functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).
- Ability to plan, conceptualize, and make sound business decisions.
- Strong presentation, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to work independently.
- Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to the work performed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Five or more years of experience in counseling, psychology, counseling psychology, or social work.
- Experience within a university setting.
- Experience assessing and treating dual-diagnosis clients.
- Experience providing crisis intervention, treatment for alcohol/drug use, and eating disorders.
- Excellent assessment skills and ability to relate to diverse student populations.
- Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
Physical Requirements
- Communicating with others to exchange information.
- Lifting and moving objects up to 20 pounds.
- Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
- Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
- Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
Schedule
Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, with weekends and after-hours work as needed.
Pay
$66,000.00 (FTE: 1.000000). Retirement eligibility: TRS Eligible.
