Assistant Director - Beaver County, PA
This position is open to Veterans, Transitioning Military, National Guard Members, Military Spouses, Wounded Warriors, and their Caregivers.
About the role
The Assistant Director assists the Director of Veteran’s Affairs in delivering quality services and advocacy for all Beaver County U.S. Veterans, Armed Forces members, their dependents, through federal, state, and county benefits and resources. The Assistant Director will respond to the emergent needs of Veterans, Armed Forces members, their dependents, and connect them to proper supportive services.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a county official who connects area veterans, their spouses, and dependents to benefits and resources of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
- Review government forms, military service records, and documents for legitimacy, accuracy, and eligibility for veteran benefits.
- Assist and advise veterans and family members with:
- Service-connected compensation or pension benefits under VBA.
- Representation of Beaver County veterans and family members in claims to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs through power of attorney (POA).
- Healthcare enrollment and benefits with the VA Healthcare system.
- State and county benefits and resources.
- Develop and maintain a working knowledge of U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs requirements for processing claims for all types of veteran benefits using federal administration network systems.
- Network with public, non-profit, community agencies, elected and appointed officials within and outside Beaver County Government.
- Develop a working knowledge of other agencies' benefits, including Social Security, Veteran State loans, County Assessors, SSI Disability, CareerLink Job development, Vocational Rehabilitation, SBA small business loans, and Veterans Franchising.
- Coordinate with the area veteran’s transportation network and the VA Healthcare CBOC in Rochester, PA.
- Assist the Director of Veterans Affairs with county benefits, including:
- Cemetery flags, markers, headstones, and memorials.
- Cemetery records.
- Burial and memorial gratuity.
- Reimbursement for observances.
- Assist the Director of Veterans Affairs with supervision and delegation of responsibilities for the Veterans Affairs Administrative Assistants.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Degree or equivalent (required).
- Bachelor’s degree in public administration, social work, or a related field (preferred).
- Prior military service and/or 3 to 5 years of management experience (preferred).
- Computer skills required for daily use.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Must obtain and maintain Accreditation/Training as a Veteran Service Officer (VSO) within a year of service.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Schedule
Requires flexibility in hours. Most work will be conducted during business hours at the Beaver County Courthouse. Some duties may require evening hours for official events within Beaver County. Limited travel outside Beaver County may be required (approximately once per year).
