Assistant Debate Coach

About the role

The Part-Time Debate Coach will mentor high school students in an expanding forensics program and reports to the Head Debate Coach.

Responsibilities

• Travels to and judges at local, state, and/or national circuit tournaments, either in California or throughout the country, monthly (reasonable airfare, hotel, and meal expenses covered).
• Assists in planning the team competition strategy and with the event logistics at competitions (help reserve airfare and hotel accommodations).
• Aids in research and case-building, attends in-person weekly practices, and leads debate drills.
• Prepares and delivers lectures regarding current issues and events.
• Provides approximately ten hours of tutoring per week.
• Represents the school at meetings and other official administrative functions with area coaches.

Physical demands

While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent must be able to:

• Stand and sit for extended periods.
• Bend and reach for filing and other job-related functions; climb up and down stairs.
• Bend, stoop, and lift to move and retrieve materials; pull, push, and lift.
• Reach both above and below shoulder height.
• Demonstrate close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus for visual inspection of work.
• Use manual dexterity to operate a computer and other office equipment.

Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree is not required but preferred.
• Must have 3-4 years prior competitive experience in Public Forum, Policy, and/or Lincoln-Douglas debate formats.
