About the Role

The Assistant Dean is responsible for the implementation, management, and promotion of two groups of inter-related programs: the graduate legal programs (LLM and SJD) and the international programs. This role ensures the programs function in accordance with the law school’s strategic plan, meet student needs, and satisfy academic standards set forth in faculty and student handbooks. The Assistant Dean also ensures programs are administered in compliance with best practices and applicable ABA standards for graduate and international programs, while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

Responsibilities

Graduate Legal Programs

  • Administer the LLM and SJD programs, including recruiting and admitting students to the LLM programs with assistance from the Assistant Dean of Admissions (JD).
  • Develop promotional materials and outreach strategies collaboratively.
  • Onboard and orient students after admission, serving as an academic advisor for LLM and exchange students on course selection, academic standards, degree requirements, and career pathways.
  • Supervise the admissions process for prospective SJD students and schedule the review of SJD applications by the Graduate Programs Committee.

International Legal Programs

  • Administer all formal and informal international programs, including 26 exchange programs, 4 summer abroad programs, and the biennial University of Zurich/Europa Institute visit.
  • Process applications from visiting scholars and handle administrative matters for invited scholars.
  • Review applications for incoming and outgoing exchange students, approve their course selections, and act as an academic advisor for all exchange students.
  • Maintain agreements with exchange partners, review their efficacy, and coordinate admissions and logistics for summer abroad programs with the Assistant Director.
  • Coordinate financial matters for summer programs and ensure compliance with ABA standards for summer abroad programs.

Committee and Panel Participation

  • Serve as an ex-officio member of the International Programs Committee and the Graduate Programs Committee.
  • Act as the law school’s representative on the Louisiana Supreme Court’s Equivalency Determination Panel, determining eligibility for foreign law graduates to take the Louisiana Bar Exam.
