South Dakota State University is seeking an Assistant Dean for Academic Programs within the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences (CAFES). This 12-month, full-time, benefits-eligible position is located in Brookings, SD.

About the role

The Assistant Dean will manage college-level activities related to student success, including scholarships, career fairs, new student orientation, academic advising, and student engagement. This position also oversees the academic unit of Agricultural Leadership, Education, Communication and Science (ALECS) and includes teaching and advising responsibilities.

SDSU is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university, with over $94 million in annual research expenditures, more than 200 academic programs, and an enrollment of approximately 12,000 students. The College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) oversees all academic activities within the college, including curriculum development, student recruitment and retention, scholarships, career fairs, internships, and student organizations.

The college has a three-fold mission to teach, conduct research, and serve through extension programs in South Dakota and beyond. In addition to the main campus in Brookings, CAFES operates the SDSU West River Research and Extension in Rapid City, eight regional extension centers, three Federally Recognized Tribal Extension Program offices, and eight research field stations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead student success activities within CAFES.
  • Serve as coordinator of the ALECS academic program.
  • Serve as primary instructor for AGED 119 First Year Seminar, AFES 494 Internship, and other courses as needed.
  • Assist with administrative duties related to curriculum development and academic activities within the college.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications:
    • Master’s degree in agriculture, biological sciences, educational counseling, or related field by start date.
    • 1-3 years of related experience in postsecondary Ag Education or a closely related discipline.
    • Experience in advising, teaching, student success, and curriculum management.
    • Valid driver’s license.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Doctorate in a discipline of agriculture, biological sciences, education, or related field by start date.

Must be authorized to work in the U.S. Sponsorship is not available for this position.
