About the role
The Assistant Dean of Pre-Clerkship Curriculum is a senior faculty member that provides academic leadership, strategic direction, and oversight for all components of the pre-clerkship phase of the MD curriculum at the University of Georgia School of Medicine.
Reporting to the Associate Dean for Curriculum, this individual leads a multi-disciplinary team of faculty and staff to ensure a rigorous, integrated, and innovative pre-clerkship curriculum that prepares students well for the clinical clerkships and eventual clinical practice.
Responsibilities
- Ensures a rigorous, integrated, and innovative pre-clerkship curriculum that prepares students well for the clinical clerkships and eventual clinical practice.
- Works closely with course directors (13 pre-clerkship courses), the Director of Small Group Learning, the Director of Anatomy, the Director of Curriculum Integration, the Assistant Dean for Assessment and Evaluation, and the Director of Teaching and Learning Development, as well as the Associate Dean for Curriculum.
- Ensures effective delivery of foundational scientific and clinical content.
- Oversight of the management and improvement of teaching and assessment processes.
- Supports faculty in advancing evidence-based educational practices.
- Collaborates with curriculum operations and academic support teams to ensure that the pre-clerkship curriculum is effectively scheduled, resourced, documented, and continuously evaluated to support student success and school-wide accreditation goals.
Requirements
- A minimum of two years in a role with demonstrable experience in the design and implementation of integrated, systems-based medical curricula.
- Seven (7) or more years of experience in medical education, including progressive responsibility for curriculum innovation, instructional design, or assessment.
- A minimum of two (2) years in a role with demonstrable experience leading teams of faculty or staff within a complex academic or clinical environment.
Qualifications
- An MD, DO, PhD, or equivalent terminal degree.
- A distinguished record of excellence in medical education and teaching.
- Eligibility for a faculty appointment at UGA School of Medicine.
Skills
- Knowledge of LCME accreditation standards, particularly those related to curricular content, and aligning curriculum with these standards.
- Ability to analyze curriculum data and use data-driven approaches to guide curricular decision-making and for continuous curricular quality improvement.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and in writing, and ability to communicate with a vast array of different groups of faculty, staff, and students.
- Knowledge of active learning methodologies, adult pedagogical principles, and instructional design.
- Strong knowledge of foundational sciences basic to medicine and their application in medical education.
