About the Role
The Assistant Director of Professional Development in the Executive Division’s Professional and Organizational Development Unit plays a central role in advancing the Law Department’s mission by overseeing attorney training and professional growth initiatives. This position supports the development of a highly skilled and effective legal workforce through program evaluation, coordination, and assessment of CLE-compliant training aligned with adult learning standards and departmental priorities.

Responsibilities
- Evaluate agency-wide training needs and coordinate the development, delivery, and assessment of CLE-compliant programs.
- Manage Orientation programs for entry and lateral attorneys.
- Coordinate the annual Trial Advocacy program.
- Lead initiatives that strengthen attorney integration, retention, and engagement.
- Support leadership development initiatives.
- Collaborate with Divisions and City agencies to enhance specialized practice area training.
- Cultivate external partnerships to expand the Department’s training resources.
- Manage core professional development programs such as the Coaching Collaborative, Training Consortium, and Mentoring Program.
- Conduct data analysis to support continuous improvement of programs.
- Advise attorneys on CLE accreditation and compliance.
- Provide subject matter guidance on the Performance Appraisal Process for Assistant Corporation Counsels.
Requirements
- At least two years of legal experience following graduation from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Current New York Bar membership in good standing.
New York City residency is not required for this position.
Pay
The Law Department sets salaries for new attorneys based on their post-law school legal experience, which typically aligns with their law school graduation year:
- 0–5 years of legal experience: $87,737–$122,300
- 5–10 years of legal experience: $122,300–$137,188
- 10–15 years of legal experience: $137,188–$159,521
- 15–20 years of legal experience: $159,521–$180,791
- 20+ years of legal experience: $180,791–$188,235
Candidates with highly specialized experience may qualify for salaries slightly above these ranges when a role requires such expertise or the position is considered hard to fill.
Schedule
Following orientation, attorneys may elect to participate in one of two remote work programs:
- Flexible Remote Work: Allows limited, irregular work from home days.
- Citywide Pilot Program: Allows attorneys to work remotely on two set days per week, subject to Division approval and staffing needs. Participants must maintain a single designated remote work location, and in-person obligations take precedence over scheduled remote days. This pilot is currently being tested across City agencies and is not yet permanent.
