About the role

The State of Connecticut, Connecticut Technical Education and Career System (CTECS) is recruiting an Assistant Cook to work at Vinal Technical High School located in Middletown, CT. The position is full‑time, first shift, 37.5 hours per week, with a schedule of 6:00 AM–2:00 PM, Monday through Friday. This is a 10‑month role that operates during the school year, returning after summer break.

Responsibilities

• Assist with the preparation and cooking of a variety of foods, including soups, salads, meats, vegetables, desserts, beverages, and other menu items.
• Help maintain a clean, safe, and efficient kitchen environment by cleaning and sanitizing kitchen equipment, utensils, dishes, and work areas, and operating kitchen machinery and equipment.
• Assist with receiving and storing food deliveries.
• Support meal service and food packaging.
• Maintain production records.
• Provide meal preparation support in the absence of the Cook.
• Perform related duties as required (e.g., washing pots, pans, dishes, silverware, floors, walls; participating in serving food; preparing food on a large scale).

Requirements

• Any experience and training that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above.
• Adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, and visual and auditory acuity; must be free from communicable diseases; a physical examination may be required.

Qualifications

• Experience preparing and serving complete daily meals in a large‑scale (500 meals/day) institutional or commercial setting.
• Experience using institutional food‑service cooking equipment.
• Experience following basic food safety and sanitation guidelines and procedures.
• Experience using basic computer software systems including email.
• ServSafe Certification or the ability to obtain it within 60 days of hire.

Skills

• Knowledge of simple food preparation and liquid/dry weights and measures.
