The New Jersey Institute for Disabilities (NJID) offers specialized programs and support throughout the State of New Jersey for infants, children, and adults with developmental and related disabilities. With a dedicated staff of more than 500 employees across 41 program sites, NJID is one of the largest not-for-profit agencies of its kind in the nation. Each year, more than 1,500 individuals with disabilities and their families benefit from NJID's unique continuum of services.

About the role

The Assistant Controller will support the Controller in managing the accounting operations of NJID, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting standards and regulations as promulgated by GAAP and other funding sources, including DOE, DDD, and Medicaid.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual internal financial statements in compliance with funding sources and GAAP.
  • Maintain the general ledger and oversee accounting staff.
  • Prepare the annual budget and biannual financial projections, including Payroll, Operating expenses, and Revenue, with supporting schedules for internal and funding sources (DOE, DDD, and County).
  • Implement and maintain adequate internal controls to safeguard company assets.
  • Coordinate with external auditors during financial audits.
  • Oversee accounts payable, receivable, and payroll functions.
  • Ensure tax compliance and prepare annual tax return 990.
  • Supervise, train, and support the accounting staff.
  • Participate in special projects and initiatives as assigned by the Controller.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • CPA or CMA certification preferred or in the process of obtaining.
  • Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience in diversified industries, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role; nonprofit experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite, including strong Excel and Pivot Table skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
