Assistant Controller

About the role
We are seeking a highly analytical Assistant Controller to help lead our general and cost accounting functions and ensure the integrity of our financial reporting for the growing $450M+ Warfighter Systems division. This role will report directly to the Warfighter Systems Controller in Roanoke, VA.
Responsibilities
- Lead local Finance Closing (month-end, quarterly, year-end) processes, including preparing and reviewing journal entries, and supporting closing documentation and approvals.
- Own overall account reconciliation processes, utilizing BlackLine system for closing and reconciliation tracking.
- Prepare and review accurate financial statements and reports, ensuring timely reporting to Warfighter Systems and Corporate Finance teams.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and internal financial policies; maintain SOX controls and procedures using AuditBoard; support external E&Y audit testing and requests.
- Support the General Accounting Manager on key processes, including General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, and Reconciliations.
- Support the Cost Accounting Manager on key processes, including Standard Costing, Inventory valuation, and Variance (Materials, Labor, Overhead) cost analysis.
- Mentor and train accounting staff, support team goal setting, and provide professional development; help lead the team during ERP transition.
- Partner with IT team to support key Accounting processes in legacy ERP system while new A&D Infor ERP system is implemented at the Roanoke site.
- Support Cash management and cross-functional initiatives, including new Operating Cashflow and Working Capital forecasting and reporting requirements.
- Assist with budgeting and forecasting activities for the division; support FP&A function with variance analysis to drive key business decision making.
- Champion continuous improvement within the Finance/Accounting team; identify and implement tools and training as needed; take on special Finance projects as assigned.
- Act as a business partner to the Warfighter Systems Site Leadership Team; collaborate with cross-functional teams such as Human Resources, Operations, Engineering, and Purchasing.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA/CMA is a plus but not required.
- Minimum of 5+ years of relevant Finance/Accounting work experience, preferably with General Ledger, Payroll, Fixed Assets, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Cost Accounting functions.
- Experience working in a project-oriented manufacturing/engineering environment preferred.
- Advanced expertise analyzing financial information; high degree of accuracy and strong attention to detail with ability to see the “big picture.”
- Ability to design Finance processes and metrics within the functional area.
- Proven solid work ethic with ability to act and operate independently to accomplish objectives and meet deadlines; ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Highly effective communication skills (verbal and written); able to communicate financial and accounting terms to business unit staff clearly and concisely.
- Mindset of continuous improvement; strong problem-solving skills and ability to proactively identify and implement process improvements.
- Advanced expertise with MS Excel including complex formulas and pivot tables.
- Defense contracting experience and working knowledge of Government cost principles (FAR, DFARS, CAS) is a plus but not required.

The salary range listed for this position reflects the anticipated base pay range for this role. Actual compensation will be determined based on factors including skills, experience, education, certifications, business needs, internal equity, and geographic location.
