About the role
The Assistant Coach under the supervision of the Head Coach is responsible for advancing the mission of the University, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, and the Bulldog Track & Field program. The role adheres to all University, NCAA, and SCIAC rules and policies.
Responsibilities
- Identify and recruit qualified prospective student-athletes based on ongoing roster expectations.
- Maintain effective and consistent communication with prospective student-athletes and Admissions Office.
- Arrange and conduct on- and off-campus visits with prospective student-athletes.
- Play a significant role in equipment management, purchasing, and upkeep for the track & field and cross-country teams.
- Coordinate set-up for practices and home meets.
- Support of operational systems that help maintain consistency across event groups and team functions.
- Collaborate with the head coach to oversee the throwers while maintaining professionalism, open communication, reliability, strong organizational skills, and cultural alignment.
- Attend all required staff meetings and complete mandatory trainings.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned to support team, departmental, and/or University-wide needs.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of one year of Track & Field coaching experience.
- Demonstrated ability to recruit and attract high-achieving student-athletes.
- Clear understanding of NCAA Division III philosophy and the role of physical education, recreational sports, and athletics within a private, liberal arts academic setting.
- Valid California Class C driver’s license with a good driving record, or the ability to obtain one within ten (10) days of appointment.
- Master’s degree from an accredited institution (preferred).
- Experience coaching at the collegiate level, specifically as a throws coach.
- Knowledge of and commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive athletic environment.
- Proven ability to manage team operations, compliance, and administrative responsibilities in a higher education setting.

- Establishing and maintaining positive and professional relationships with student-athletes, colleagues, and admissions staff.
- Organizing and executing recruitment activities, including campus visits and communications.
- Leading individual and group training sessions with clarity and motivation.
- Communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing, across diverse audiences.
- Managing multiple tasks, setting priorities, and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced athletic environment.
- Using technology for recruiting management, data tracking, and social media campaigns.
- Promoting inclusivity and fostering a positive team culture aligned with the values of a liberal arts institution.
