About the role

The City of Houston Legal Department is seeking an attorney for its Office of Inspector General to provide legal advice to its clients on matters including discrimination, retaliation, fraud, waste, abuse, and other violations of law involving employee misconduct.

Responsibilities

  • Advising the City of Houston on matters involving discrimination, retaliation, fraud, waste, abuse, and other violations of law involving employee misconduct.
  • Gathering evidence.
  • Interviewing complainants, respondents, and witnesses at every level of the organization.
  • Evaluating evidence.
  • Researching and drafting legal reports.
  • Training City employees on relevant legal issues.
  • Working with local, state and federal authorities.
  • Handling special projects, as assigned.

Requirements

  • Requires a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from an American Bar Association accredited college of law.
  • Requires basic computer skills and working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience practicing law and must be an active member in good standing of the Texas State Bar and eligible for admission to Federal court.
  • Must be a member of the Texas State Bar on or about the first day of employment.

  • Preference will be given to applicants with experience giving legal advice to all levels of an organization.

  • Department may administer skills assessment test.
  • This position is subject to random drug testing and if a promotional position, candidate must pass an assignment drug test.
