About the role

The eBERlight group at the X-ray Science Division (XSD) of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) is seeking an assistant beamline scientist to support biological and environmental research activities at the X-ray Imaging group (IMG) beamlines. The IMG group operates 2-BM, 7-BM, and 32-ID beamlines with full-field imaging instruments, including ultrahigh-speed imaging, nanometer-resolution 2D and 3D imaging, and high-speed micro-tomography. The group also develops scientific software methods for data analysis and interpretation, supporting APS user programs and independent research in materials science, geology, and biology.

The successful candidate will support both the eBERlight and IMG groups’ scientific user community, focusing on advancing X-ray tomography and synchrotron-based full-field imaging applications in biological and environmental systems to enable transformational discoveries and a comprehensive understanding of complex systems.

Responsibilities

  • Developing R&D activities
  • Conceiving, designing, and implementing synchrotron instrumentation equipment and scientific experiments
  • User operation and support
  • Coordinating engineers and support staff assigned to the project
  • Reporting project progress status and relevant results
  • Student mentoring
  • Outreach activities
  • Coordinating cross-facility projects
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • PhD in physics, chemistry, biology, environmental science, or related fields
  • Knowledge of X-ray methods, particularly computed tomography and relevant instrumentation and software
  • Proficiency in software skills for advanced data analysis and image segmentation, including expertise in utilizing software tools and algorithms to analyze and process complex datasets
  • Expertise in designing and developing customized in situ/operando sample environments tailored for studying biological and environmental systems
  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, with the ability to interact with people at all levels both within and outside the laboratory

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge in the fields of biological and environmental science
  • Skills and expertise in the use and design of sample environments or analysis of large and complex datasets

Pay

The expected hiring range for this position is $94,486.00 - $147,398.94. Pay offered will be determined based on factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate qualifications, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
