Assistant Attorney-Water and Environmental
About the role
The Aurora City Attorney's Office seeks an experienced lawyer with a focus on water law, litigation, and environmental law. The ideal candidate will represent the City of Aurora and its utility enterprise, Aurora Water, in Colorado Water Court. They will also advise Aurora Water on legal matters and provide legal advice on water rights.
Responsibilities
- Serves as counsel and assists in all aspects of Water Court litigation
- Conducts legal research and writes persuasive pleadings and memoranda
- Advise Aurora Water staff on legal matters
- Provide legal advice on water rights, ditch company governance, acquisitions, intergovernmental agreements, legislation, and drafting ordinances and resolutions
- Represent Aurora Water in administrative hearings and rulemakings
- Provide legal counsel to various boards and commissions
- Respond to requests from Aurora Water staff and members of City Council
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited law school
- Licensed to practice law in Colorado
- 3+ years of experience in law, preferably in litigation, water, or environmental law
- Prior experience working with governmental entities and Colorado water law entities
- Genuine interest in Colorado water law and water rights
- Knowledge of procedural rules, Colorado Rules of Civil Procedure, Rules of Evidence, Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, and local court rules
- Ability to litigate cases, conduct legal research, and provide sound advice to City staff
- Effective interpersonal skills, teamwork, professionalism, and strong customer service skills

Pay
The salary range for this position is $99,204.78 - $124,005.97, with a full compensation grade of $99,204.78 - $155,007.46.
Schedule
The position follows a hybrid work structure. Employees have some required days in the office, but can work remotely or from the office based on task demands or personal preferences. Effective the first day of employment, the selected individuals must maintain Colorado residency.
