Assistant Attorney General - Criminal Prosecution
Job Description
The Nebraska Department of Justice is seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal Prosecution Division. This division prosecutes significant felony and misdemeanor crimes and works closely with individuals and agencies to pursue justice on behalf of the State.
This role offers the opportunity to handle meaningful criminal prosecutions representing the State prosecuting criminal cases in state trial courts throughout Nebraska. As an Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal Bureau, you will build significant courtroom experience, take on complex criminal-law issues, and help protect Nebraskans.
Examples of Work Performed
- Prioritizing and prosecuting a wide variety of felony and misdemeanor crimes including homicide, child and elderly abuse, white collar, property, drug, official misconduct, and other cases as assigned.
- Consulting with crime victims and updating victim liaisons about case status.
- Communicating with witnesses, defense counsel, and peer County Attorneys regarding pending matters.
- Researching issues of criminal law, writing briefs and memoranda, conducting pretrial hearings, negotiations and trials all in the pursuit of successful prosecutions.

Requirements/Qualifications
- Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from an ABA-accredited law school. Licensed to practice law in Nebraska or clear ability to be licensed by motion. Minimum of one year’s experience in a private law firm, government agency, or as a judicial clerk. Excellent legal writing skills. Demonstrated Work Ethic.
- Preferred Qualifications: Three or more years of civil litigation, appellate advocacy, or criminal prosecution experience. Prior experience in successful prosecution of significant felony crimes or public corruption cases. Demonstrated subject matter expertise.

- Individual could either work from NDOJ’s 1221 N Street location or in a location in Greater Nebraska commensurate with the Office’s needs.
