Assistant Attorney General (Attorney IV), Criminal Appeals

Job Responsibilities

Assigned to the Criminal Appeals Section as Assistant Attorney General, this position involves:

  • Representing the State of South Carolina in criminal appeals resulting from criminal prosecution throughout the state.
  • Performing professional legal work relating to criminal appeals through the entirety of the appellate process, including:
    • Reading transcripts,
    • Conducting necessary research,
    • Preparing briefs and related pleadings in state appellate courts and the United States Supreme Court as necessary.
  • Representing the State during oral arguments before the South Carolina Supreme Court, South Carolina Court of Appeals, and other courts as necessary.
  • Responding to requests for advice or assistance from solicitors and law enforcement entities regarding criminal matters or issues.
  • Timely responding to telephone calls and other contacts.
  • Providing responses to victim advocates regarding the status of assigned cases.
  • Maintaining an accurate calendar of all due dates.
  • Processing incoming mail, providing appropriate instructions, and ensuring all due dates are noted on the calendar.
  • Updating LawBase to reflect actions in all cases for which the attorney is responsible.
  • Maintaining and promptly closing all case files, ensuring all documents are clipped down in all files unless too large to secure with fasteners.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate Degree and a minimum of ten years of experience as a practicing attorney.
  • Must be a member and in good standing with the South Carolina Bar.
  • Must satisfy Rule 403 requirements.
  • Position may require overnight travel and transportation of files.

Qualifications

  • Must be flexible to travel, organized, and able to work independently in meeting deadlines.
  • Excellent written skills required; operates dictation equipment and must be able to use Westlaw.
  • Must be able to transport files to court.
