Assistant Attorney General (Attorney III) - Opinions
About the Role
Performs professional legal work for the State, its subdivisions, and officials under limited supervision. Conducts independent legal research on a wide variety of legal issues in response to formal written requests from local and statewide public officials to prepare legal opinions.
Assists public officials and private citizens with legal inquiries via telephone, based on legal research or prior opinions of the Attorney General's Office. Prepares and drafts opinions in response to formal or email requests. Reviews and assists other attorneys with their research and drafting.
Performs additional duties as assigned by the Deputy Attorney General, Chief Deputy Attorney General, Attorney General, or Solicitor General, including special litigation projects.
Responsibilities
- Conduct independent legal research to prepare opinions for public officials.
- Respond to telephone inquiries from public officials and private citizens regarding legal issues.
- Draft and prepare legal opinions in response to formal or email requests.
- Review and assist other attorneys with legal research and opinion drafting.
- Perform special litigation projects and other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Juris Doctorate Degree.
- At least five years of experience as a practicing attorney.
- Must be a member in good standing with the South Carolina Bar.
- Must satisfy Rule 403 requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of South Carolina laws.
- Knowledge of general case, statutory, and common law.
- Knowledge of judicial and quasi-judicial procedures and rules of guidance.
- Ability to interpret and apply laws in court decisions.
- Ability to analyze facts, evidence, and legal instruments.
- Ability to express conclusions and arguments clearly and logically.
- Ability to plan and direct the activities of a legal staff.
